Anyone here apply for the Robertson scholarship? When can we expect to hear anything? How many applied?

But there was an additional supplement online for it with essays and other information. What I mean is, did anyone fill that out?

alicejohnson statement that every applicant to Duke is considered for the Robertson is incorrect. Most applicants to Duke are automatically weeded out. The ones that do make it past several rounds of selection still have to indicate that they wish to be considered for the scholarship.

And Erin, yes, you have the right idea. You must fill those supplements to be truly considered.

There is a parent here with a Roberson Scholar son (kelonwa). Her son originally did not fill out the Robertson supplement and was then asked by the admissions office to fill out the supplement, I believe, and was then considered (I may be getting those details slightly wrong).

From Duke: "Merit Scholarships

Duke University also offers a limited number of merit scholarships. All applicants for admission are automatically considered for any available merit scholarship. Specific applications are not required, and are not available, with the exception of the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program. While students who apply to Duke may be considered for the Robertson, completing the Robertson Scholars online application is the only way to ensure that the student’s materials will be reviewed by the Robertson selection committee."

So, yeah, everybody is considered for all merit scholarships *including *the Robertson, but to be completely sure the Robertson committee reviews the applicant, a separate application is necessary. As purpleacorn said, Duke may encourage an applicant to fill out the separate Robertson paperwork after reading the file and thinking they’d be a good fit.

bluedog, despite what that site says, not everyone that applies to Duke is considered for ANY scholarship since most people that apply are already filtered out for below average grades. I’m not calling Duke dishonest but it doesn’t make sense that an article will be published discussing how most of the applicants to the University will be filtered out in the first round but then say every applicant to Duke is considered for the Robertson and other scholarships.

Jwest22: I respectfully suggest you may have missed a key point. Specifically, if an applicant is eliminated from the completion for a Duke undergraduate Merit Scholarship (due to grades or some other perfectly legitimate reason), then – in fact – HE HAS LEGITIMATELY BEEN CONSIDERED. Obviously, that individual has not succeeded to the point where he is “competitive candidate” for one of the “full ride” merit scholarships (such as the Robertson), but Duke only promises consideration, nothing more. In sum, “consideration” does not – and should not – mean a comprehensive review by the applicable committee in Undergraduate Admissions, but is does mean that each application is assessed – considered – to ascertain if it warrants further evaluation and potentially committee appraisal.

Kelowna here.
My son did indeed apply to Duke because of a Robertson. He also applied to UNC Chapel Hill.
He never did fill out any supplemental Robertson papers until he has been contacted by them that he is a semifinalist (it was before Duke regular decision ). At that time he knew he had a full ride to UNC Chapel Hill. He did become a finalist in the Robertson and he did accept the offer to attend Duke. He turned down U Chicago (full ride - Stamps Scholar), Yale, Caltech , Berkeley and Dartmouth (in the top schools) and he is absolutely having the time of his life at Duke.
If you have any questions, please ask. My son is at Trinity , majoring in physics and economy (so far anyway ). He also has a weekly gig at Duke Student Broadcasting. And he writes for a monthly magazine there (Tower ???) He is extremely happy at Duke. And we are thrilled that he is there!

Every admission officer that reads a document considers whether each student they get to read about would fit for a particular scholarship. Those officers then earmark the files that make sense for different programs for those program directors. The Robertson is one of the few that requires a supplemental application - and if an admissions officer feels a particular applicant is a good fit, the officer will pass the information along to the Robertson folks; if they agree, the student will find out about it. For the rest of the programs, those files get routed to the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows for sorting and consideration.

My son just received an email stating that he was not selected for the Robertson scholarship.

Does anyone how many semi-finalists are offered the Robertson scholarship after the interview process? How many students are offered the interview?
