Duke University, will I be going there?

The oh so original thread...

Duke (ED binding) Econ Major
UNC (EA) Econ Major
Michigan (EA) Engineering Major
Georgia Tech Engineering Major
NC State (EA) Engineering Major
Virginia Tech Engineering Major

GPA (weighted): 3.85 -I prob need to inform you our valadic has a 4.45 and got a 2400 SATs and 36 ACTs. My counselor also said I have the 5th hardest schedule of anyone at our school.
Rank: 50 of 360
School: Highly competitive- 99% go to four year colleges, private, parachial, a few each year go to Ivies and a good amount go to other majors schools.
ECs: Math Club VP, Science Olympiad Member, Environmental Club Member, Nation Honors Society Member, Duke TIP particepant, I got the 3rd highest score on the AMC test at our school and almost broke a 100 score on it. I tutored kids junior year at a inner city school every Tuesday, tutored for NHS, competed at Science Olympiad for Boom. 100 hours community service. Other stuff but I forgot.

Work Experience:
5 hours a week stocking 3 tons of livestock feed in a store for a local business
40 hours a week working at local barn during the summer
Worked various hours as an accountant/data entry person for CDL & Associates

SATS
Math: 740
English: 670
Writing: 600 (ew...)

Schedule:
AP Euro
AP MicroEco
AP Enviromental
AP Gov
AP Stats
Honors Calc
Honors Eng

(Previous years I have ALWAYS taken the hardest courses possible other than AP english I took honors and instead of AP Calc I took honors because my counselor wouldn't allow 6 APs in one year)

Past APs
US His - 4
Chem - 3

I guess this stuff helps

Grandfather went to Michigan and became assisstant VP at DOW 30 company
Brother goes to UNC and is Deans List and stuff like that
Dad went to Duke and did very well, majored in Biomedical Engineering currently successful S&P 500 company manager.
I live in a rural environment and therefore spend most of my time with animals, working for a livestock store, or working at a barn.
I got my recs from two english teachers who really liked me.
I wrote my essay about tutoring at an inner city school and I might add, it was really good.

*If anything gets me into Duke it will be because of this: I have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, most people are homeschooled, hospitalized, or dead from it so I've proven to be a rather unique individual. Also I wrote my personal statement about battling Anemia, Malnurishment, Weight problems, blood transfusions, fatigue, and all the other pains of having a four foot long continuously bleeding ulcer in my intestines.

P.S. sorry for the misspellings, I'm not considering an English Major so whats it matter.

Well, its a tricky one. On one hand your dad went there and your scores are solid. The GPA is a little low, even when paired with the difficult schedule, but not horribly so. Thankfully the writing is your worst section, and a 1410/1600 is at least looked at anywhere you’d apply. The Extra Cirriculars are a little mediocre as well, and seem to be geared too heavily towards academically invovled stuff, which is ok, although the lack of variety could hurt. I’m assuming you’re from North Carolina if you are giving the NC love?

I’m not expert at this, but I’d probably put it something like this
Duke - Low Reach
UNC - Low Reach
Michigan - Low Reach (I’m assuming you’re Out of State here)
Georgia Tech - Match
NC State - In
Virginia Tech - In

If you have the time, chance back? : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/806870-senior-worried-about-chances-top-southern-schools.html</a></p>

I’m only familiar with Virginia Tech which I’d say you’re definitely in. Good academics

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/805737-columbia-college-chicago.html</a></p>

bump, Also, a REALLY wierd thing happened tonight. I just got a call for an interview by this guy and I never applied for an interview. Also, I sent in my ap two weeks after the interview registration deadline, and I read that interviews can’t be gaurenteed. So like ***? Is it a good sign to get a call for an interview or do they do that for all ED applications?

P.S. I must say, I am one of those people you hate and think its unfair but I do know some people on the inside. They might have done this for me. But truly, I’m a little shocked to have gotten the call.

Your GPA is a little bit low, but you have decent EC and you are legacy in certain schools.
Duke-match
UNC-low reach
Michigan-in
Georgia Tech-match
NC State-in
Virginia Tech-in

so far i’m seeing good chance for duke from people’s comments, I kinda assumed that was an impossibility so maybe be harder? lol

bump and i chance back peeps

Duke- You are definitely a competitive applicant, especially if they called for an interview. I think you have a shot.
UNC- In (because you have good scores and are in-state)
Michigan- Not sure. I think you should get in, but being out-of-state always makes it tougher.
Virginia Tech-In
Georgia Tech- In
NC State- In

bump, please anxious college app people, i will chance you too…

Duke - Low (because of legacy) Reach
UNC - Low Reach (assuming you’re in-state)
Michigan - Reach
Georgia Tech - Match
NC State - In
Virginia Tech - In

Lots of reports here in the past, of being called for an interview without a request, or with application after the deadline.

P.S. My experience with patients with Crohn’s does not sound as dire as yours! Glad your doing ok!

bump, bump, bump…

So i visited Duke yesterday and well… i didn’t really get a good idea of it. It seemed to be really social and of course beautiful, but I still don’t know about the student body too well. eh… Also this lady said ED apps are up 33%!!! I kinda assume I’m not getting in now.

bump!!!

With legacy you’ll get a HUGE bump applying ED, so I’d say its a low reach for you. Otherwise it would be a genuine reach; especially because of your SAT scores.

Duke (ED binding) Econ Major-Low reach; despite legacy+ED, you are still 2nd decile and the SAT could be better. But at least it isn’t too far away
UNC (EA) Econ Major-low reach
Michigan (EA) Engineering Major-eh, I’d go low reach with this one
Georgia Tech Engineering Major-match

In at the other two.

A chance back would be appreciated!

bump… now going to study for 3 AP tests

bump, interview tomorrow, i look fly? haha

u dont have to apply for the interview. and even passed deadline, if they have room, they will take you. i submitted my supplement on the 20th (1 day late, actually more like 2 hours late), because apparently they use eastern time, and i submitted from west coast at 11 pm… LOL

but still got interview. today. it was great. your stats are similar to mine. but i dont have legacy. hope you get in… lol

U’ve got a good chance at most of them
except maybe duke, but ur legacy helps a bit

Chance back?
