Duke-Virginia Tech

A shot like THAT would make even people like ME rush the court.

Yeah but people have made a big deal about only rushing the court for national championships, and gave UNC grief for doing it after they won a Duke-UNC game.

You know why i love duke? It has some of the brightest and hardest working people in the country, and yet they can still paint themselves blue and jump around because of basketball. Sounds like the best of both worlds.

Yeah but the rushing the court thing is not the same in both situations. We rushed the court this time not because we won the game but because of HOW we won the game. Obviously we wouldn't have rushed the court had we simply beaten VT in a less exciting fashion. People rush the court when they win the championship even if they win by 20. It's a different situation.

I agree with ay_caramba...that is definitely true in many instances.

I know why we rushed the court, and probably would have had I been at Cameron. I'm just saying that I'm going to be rolling my eyes if I still see Dukies bashing other schools for it, or if I hear the "Because Duke students are better than everyone else, we only rush the court for national championships" line again.

i agree, exactly

Agree with bananasinpyjamas completely. It's easy to get caught up in the emotion and excitement of the crowd, and it was an extremely exciting play. However, just wanted to weigh in on a couple of technicalities:

This is really picky, but it's something that gets on my nerves (not picking on you, bananas; I know it's a cheer sheet slogan). You can't rush the floor when you win the national championship. The game is never played on your own court, and security is very tight. The celebration on the floor is for the players and coaches, and the fans usually watch the trophy presentation from the stands and then go to greet the team at the hotel. So if anyone is holding out for a national championship in order to have the thrilling experience of rushing the court, you're going to be waiting, well, forever.

About this win being "different" from UNC rushing the court:

When UNC rushed the court after the March 2005 win, the ending was also very tense and dramatic (UNC came back from being down something like 9 with 2 minutes remaining and the game was in doubt until the final buzzer). It was also the first UNC win in the series in 2 years. I'd say that's fairly exciting - maybe not as acutely exciting as an absolutely crazy miracle shot a la Sean Dockery's, but still very justifiable.

I have no problem with students rushing the court for big wins, as it is an exciting way to celebrate a victory and to feel that special sense of camaraderie with players, fellow students, alumni, fans, what have you. However, I personally feel that it is kind of silly for the #1 ranked team to rush the court for a victory over what is frankly a rather poor unranked team (if you need justification, VT lost to Bowling Green at home, and that's pretty bad). The nature of the game as a whole and of the victory were unexpected and thrilling, and I might have gotten caught up in the crowd and done the same thing if I were in that situation, but sitting here in front of my computer, I'd like to believe that if I were in the Duke student section for that game, I'd have experienced excitement alongside relief that Dockery bailed us out rather than uncontrollable joy that we beat VT at home. It was a big shot by an unexpected hero, but it was hardly a big win, and, rationally speaking (I know that, realistically, being in Cameron with the other Crazies often defies rationality) it should not have been treated as such.

when Duke plays a national championship, people fill up Cameron to watch it together on the big screen, so you can rush the court then...

yeah, in retrospect, woulda been nice to be able to hold back from rushing the floor to preserve that tradition, but wasnt possible in the heat of the moment...being in Cameron for that was insane, especially after Dowdell was right in front of us talking **** before the final play, big grin on his face with his hand to his ear pretending like he couldnt hear us anymore...

There is nothing wrong with rushing the court when you win like that, ever. In fact, there might be something wrong with your fans if they don't rush the court after a game-winning shot like that.

In conclusion, Duke is the best f*ing school

I was at the game, and as much as I like Duke's traditions like not rushing the court, the atmosphere just felt too right to do it. I understand all the crap about us only doing it for a national championship, but Dockery deserved it. It has always been obvious that Dock has taken a backseat to Redick and Williams and last year even to Melchionni and he's always been really gracious about it. I know that that shot was more luck than anything else, but it was a fitting way to thank him.
By the way, did anyone else notice that before the game when we were cheering players names, Dockery was almost forgotten. We went through all the scrubs before we got to him. Cameron Crazies better not forgot him ever again.
Also, a lot of the Cameron Crazies were freshmen and so far they have no clue what's going on anyway. Don't get mad freshmen, it's the truth. By the end of the season we'll all have it down pat.

And Reddick is back ...

Yes, Redick is definitely back. 41 points and 9 (3 pt. FG) in their win over #2 Texas today = wow!

AMAZING. 41 points vs. #2. Just...AMAZING.
