Duke vs. Brown

I am interested in double majoring in economics and creative writing. I am wondering which school has better/more respected programs in those fields. I am also interested in possibly pursuing and MBA after college and was wondering which school had better placement at top business schools. Last thing, social life is very important to me and I'm definitely looking for a fun/crazy college experience.

I don’t think there is a creative writing major at Duke, AFAIK, there’s a distinction program in creative writing for english majors though…

I’m a current Duke student, and I must tell you, we definitely do have the “fun/crazy college experience.” That’s all I CAN tell you at this point. Haha. Good luck, but hey, EVERYONE knows Duke is better than Brown ;)

Which career path are you considering after graduation (before MBA)?

Econ: Duke

CW: Brown. Duke has an excellent English dept but edge to Brown if only because it has a graduate writing program (experimental, post-modern, by reputation)

Better MBA placement: Tie
Most MBA placement: likely Duke

Fun/Crazy: Duke

what’s most MBA placement?

Well I am only a freshman but already at Duke I have seen that economics majors get a ton of opportunities since we have such a high presence on Wall Street.

“what’s most MBA placement”

I meant Duke is more pre-professional so more of its grads go to business school.

I had to make the same decision, and I chose Duke.

SOCIAL: The social scenes are very different. Duke does have a more active party scene. That’s not to say that the Brown social scene is at all inferior, but it’s just different. It all depends on personal preference.

ECON: What type of career are you looking at? If you’re interested in investing banking/consulting, Duke is one of the main targets for recruiting, which, as you’ll soon learn, is critical if that’s what you’re interested in. Regarding business school, though, MBA programs don’t accept applicants until they have 2-3 years of work experience after undergraduate school. Thus, for MBA, it wouldn’t make that much of a difference. The Duke student body is very “pre-professional,” though, in that the majority would label themselves as either pre- med, law, or business.

I’m not quite sure about creative writing. Most people here seem to be more science-oriented, but that may just be because I am, so all my classmates are as well.
