Duke vs. Columbia

ha ha ha... as a former denizen of the suburbs of NYC I agree

sorry to bump an old thread...i was 95% sure about Columbia but after visiting i think i may have so doubts about it ~
although the campus is nice, i found a lot of weed and drinking at my host's dorms and some people were saying that if you want weed go to carmen...
the social scene wasn't that great... there wasn't too much campus vibe...where were all the undergrads?
the subway experience was difficult lol...im from the city and im used to the subway but wow

maybe i should visit duke now...

Definitely visit Duke, it is VERY different...I know how disillusioning it was for me when I visited Columbia after I got in...

Save Columbia for grad school. The same things that make it a less-than-ideal undergraduate institution make it a great graduate school place

wow, different strokes for different folks I suppose, but I absolutely loved columbia this weekend. an ideal mizture of isolation and integration with the best city on earth, a tremendously stimulating core and philosophy, and a campus diversity and social atmosphere unparalleled by any other elite university. if weed and beer turned you off, you may be in a sticky situation as every place I've visted so far has had an abundance of alcohol (nature of the college beast I suppose). but also it seems anywhere if you don;t want any part of that ity's quite easy to do that as well (seemed so at columbia). and the campus? what beautiful architectul. where were the undergrads? did you not see the endless kids blanketing the steps and fields? noone seems to exactly be able to articulate what turned them off about columbia. it is indeed a very diverse and social place, perhaps that surprised you.... I'm going to duke next week, and I'm sure that will thrill me as well....

The thing I didn't like about Columbia Days was...
- constricting campus, just seemed not enough space
- didn't learning anything about EMS, which is my potential major
- Atmosphere filled with seemingly few, restricted parties, but I was only there for the day, so who knows
