Which one would it be easier to maintain a higher GPA (I will work extremely hard) and improve my chances for getting into a top 5 medical school???

My guess is Duke for highest GPA, but JHU and Dartmouth for med school. Prob JHU for med school though.

Dartmouth- Alot of drinking. I know a freshman who will be transferring out because he couldn’t handle the greek scene.
Johns hopkins- don’t know anything.
Duke- most prestige.
Go to Duke!!

^ sounds like your friend is a wimp, and wimps don’t do well at Dartmouth- particularly those who can’t deal with the drinking pressure of any campus. Duke is prestigous to some in North Carolina, but not many feel it is better or has a high quality of life-- there is no college town at Duke and the the East campus is the pits. So, it is always important to get a good fit and not everyone fits in every school. Good luck.

I would say Dartmouth is the strongest for GPA balance, advising, and med school placement. Honestly- I’m not being biased here. Dartmouth IMO offers the best quality of life, grade/work balance, and overall placement with Duke second. I would avoid cutthroat Hopkins at all costs personally.

I know 5 people who went to JHU as pre-meds. One went to Georgetown for med school (amazing), the other 5 dropped medicine all together- could not handle the students or the grade curves. Hopkins is a weeder where the top of the top do well, but most struggle.

good thread. im considering duke and dartmouth too. so far im leaning toward duke.

Can you tell me more about drinking/Greek scene at Dartmouth?
How prevalent is it?
I spent a weekend night at Claremont McKenna and came across a lot of drinking; can anyone familiar with both schools tell me how Dartmouth compares?

I honestly think that they are all about equal options for a pre-med. Very difficult choice. In the medical community JHU undergrad is very well respected and it will stay with you throughout your medical career, residency directors will take note of it, etc. Doing well at Hopkins as a pre-med student means a lot, but in terms of overall chances, they are all equal options. I would say the most important thing is fit and I would visit and get a feel for the campus culture.
