I'm choosing between Duke and Dartmouth for undergrad. with the goal of getting into the best possible medical school in four years. Which is best and why?

One of my friends was choosing between the two. He chose Duke.

Duke has the best primary medical care in the country and the weather is better. For this one I would go Duke.

I was faced with the same decision this year…actually mine was JHU vs. Dartmouth vs. Duke vs. UChicago…and I chose Dartmouth…due to higher grade inflation for science courses than lets say duke or chicago…

Dartmouth hands down. Duke is a good school, but when I think Duke I always associate it with sports not academics.

^nastynate what are you talking about. Duke has one of the best pre medical programs in the nations. Its pre-med advising is top notch and they have numerous opportunities for students to get involved at the Duke Medical Center as well as doing research on campus. There is actually a thread in the Duke forum between these two colleges that would be good for the OP to look at.

Not saying Duke isn’t a good school, but when you think Harvard do you think sports or academics? Academics obviously. When I think Duke I think sports. They do have a great medical program, but if the OP is considering applying to say another ivy for med school it’ll probably look better if he’s coming from Dartmouth.

You don’t think Duke has good academics? You need a serious breath of fresh air…

what part of one of the best pre-med programs do you not understand. I don’t know the level of pre-med at Dartmouth, but most likely Duke is just as good or better.

Go to Duke; Dartsmouth is more of a Liberal Arts School than Duke, and Duke has the superior Medical Center.

Duke. Fabulous medical center and pre-med curriculum, better weather, beautiful campus.
Pre-med very competitive, but it probably is anyplace comparable.

Dartmouth places more premeds into med school than Duke. Dartmouth is above 90% while Duke is around the low 80s.

Academic quality wise they are comparable but Dartmouth, well Dartmouth is Dartmouth. People who like Duke love to say that it is the Ivy of the South. Well, Dartmouth really IS an Ivy…

Again, as I said before Duke has a good medical program, but Dartmouth is an ivy leauge institution. Currently Harvard is most widely considered to have best graduate medical program. (see the link below)

As I mentioned before I’m not dissing Duke I’m just saying that going to Dartmouth might produce a better change of bieng acceted to “the best possible medical school” as the OP mentioned. Chill out, Duke IS a great school.

Stats cannot be used. It doesn’t factor into account grade inflation, the fact that Dartmouth might limit those who can actually apply to medical school by weeding out unqualified students. If you go look on the pre-med forum you can see everyone bashing on the statistics.

Just because it’s an ivy? I guess in your opinion MIT and Stanford are not as good? duke would def be an Ivy (and is ranked higher than a few) if it was in the NE. Alas it is an ivy with the weather.

oh forget it. you’re clearly missing the point.

People who go to duke do NOT consider it an “ivy of the south.” In fact, when the President of Duke (Dick Broadhead) came from Yale, people at Duke were worried that he would transform Duke into a school with an “ivy” feel, ruining Duke’s unique, amazing character. People who go to Duke realize that the ivy league is a sports conference and love that Duke is in the ACC. People who go to Duke also don’t get caught up in the obsession with NE ivy prestige.

Saying you would choose Dartmouth over Duke because of the sports conference it is in is preposterous. Duke and Dartmouth are both great schools. Never having attended Dartmouth, I can’t comment on the comparison of the pre-med programs at all, but I can say that Duke has a great pre-med program and an incredible med school. It also has great sports.

Duke-nicer campus and great weather.

Go to Duke.

Go to Duke. It’s warmer, nicer, and there will be a brilliant BME PhD student coming to Duke this Fall.
