I am anxiously waiting to hear from these two great schools, and I was wondering how people would face the dilema of choosing between these two, and how they stack up both socially and academically

IMO, it all depends on what you want to study. Socially, I couldn't answer, but I know that for Govt/IR, etc, Gtown is second to none.

it also depends on how big of a sports person you are. duke is undoubtedly one of the premier sporting universities, and has excellent sports programs, basketball and lacrosse being its best sports. so if you have a lot of school spirit, you should seriously consider duke. gtown sports are pretty crappy sorry to say, only lacrosse is excellent, basketball is on the rise, but we are nowhere as good as duke. our facilities arent that great anyway. dont get me wrong, i love gtown, its fantastic, but its major drawback is its sports talent. so if you are a sports person, duke is the place to be. and duke is one of the top universities academically as well, so it an amazing univ. though location wise, nothing compares to gtown. HOYA SAXA!!
ps. i am a freshman at gtown, college

academically, Duke and Georgetown are comparable.

Ok sure, Georgetown b-ball is not on the same level as Duke's, but they still have a kick a$$ program. It may have taken some hits in the past 5 years or so, but they have won a few championships in the past couple decades.

Do the names Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson mean anything to you? Georgetown has produced better professional players than Duke ever has/will. It's such a shame too, Grant Hill was a beast, and Jay Williams was looking good.

Not to mention Dikembe, Alonzo Mourning, etc

yes, i know of gtown's past talent.
i am a huge sports fan...and i just came from a home game at mc donough gym.
but still, our basketball team isnt excellent, but its always amazing to go to a game. it is getting better though.
and dont question my knowledge about sports, esp. gtown sports...i am the most crazy sports person you will ever meet...all i am saying is that gtown sports arent that good....i said our only good programs, which are SUPPORTED are basketball and lacrosse.
ps. we beat cal state today in the 2nd round of the NIT.

Come on guys be real. Everybody here knows that Duke athletics are superior to Georgetown's by far. Georgetown was a basketball powerhouse for like 15 years but they have faded since the departure of John Thompson.

Coach K has THREE national championships, and he might have another in 2 weeks.

Duke is tied with Stanford and MIT in the US News and World Report rankings, so that has to mean something

Duke has better graduate school placement

I say Duke is the better choice

Duke doesn't have DC.
Duke doesn't have the opportunities for internships (ie connections) that Georgetown does.
Duke doesn't have the School of Foreign Service.
Duke doesn't have the renowned IPol/Diplomatic programs that can be found at Georgetown.

Depending on what you want to major in. Georgetown is great. If sports are that important to you, obvious Duke is superior. Personally, I could care less about sports (except that it all eventually goes back to a bigger endowment which mean more financial aid for me, with which yay sports), and for my particular major, Georgetown is much more invovled.

There are pros and cons to both- there is great access in DC to an abundance of opportunities and resources that other schools do not have and cannot be bought...

I'm from Houston, so I like Dikembe and Ewing (Go Rockets!)

Although I don't put a lot of stress into rankings, I can't understand why GT is always ranked in the bottom 20's.

because of the endowment/money management issues. Georgetown is one of the top 15 most selective schools in the country, and has excellent academics, especially in various areas. Although its athletic facilities are lacking(and steps are currently being taken to better them, but nothing happens in a day), there is a good sense of school spirit. Unlike at other schools, people here actually wear Georgetown shirts/sweatshirts. I went to the bball game last night at McDonough, and it was AMAZING. It was sold out, and was a great game. So, i really think it's illogical to base your decision on sports alone(not that you were doing that), but there are other aspects of each school that should interest you.

as a nc girl, duke doesn't really seem like that good a school, just because i think they have a lower standard for in-staters (which sucks, but i think is true). but, overall, it is impossible to beat duke- first of all, it has incredible academics (5th in the nation)
second- the blue devils. obviously, none of you have ever been to cameron indoor stadium. it's insane. the definition of school spirit can be found in the cameron crazies student section- these kids campout for months (yes, months) in the winter to get tickets to the big acc games. if you are a basketball fan, duke is your school. we're just not going to bring up the game from two nights ago...
on top of that, duke is about 10 minutes down the road from chapel hill, which is the ultimate college town. durham itself kind of sucks (although the campus is absolutely gorgeous- gtown doesn't compare), but chapel hill is awesome. socially, i think everyone would be content at duke. greek life is a relatively strong force, but you dont have to pledge to enjoy the parties
i applied to both schools- if my decision came down to gtown and duke, i would probably pick duke. although gtown does offer great opportunities in the dc area, duke offers one of the best the best all-around college experience. plus, you can always go intern in dc over the summer

Duke does have a MUCH larger campus than Georgetown(Georgetown is about 110 acres, Duke is over 1000 I believe). They are also in different locations. Sure you could go to Chapel Hill, or, you could go right outside the gates to find one of the best college towns in the country.
In regards to athletics, yes, i agree, Duke is AMAZING. If you're really into athletics and having that experience, then that's more points for Duke. Georgetown's athletic facilities are sub-par. However, steps are being taken to better them. Construction on the multi-sport facility that will replace Harbin Field has begun(at least preliminary work). McDonough Arena does need some work, and I personally think that it needs to be enlarged instead of simply renovated. Most bball games are at MCI Center, so although it isn't on campus, it's still a nice experience to go downtown to see the team play. However, yes, our facilities simply aren't on the same level as Duke's, or Penn's, or various other similar schools with good athletic programs.
I honestly don't think you can say that Duke's academics are better than Georgetown's based on the US News rankings. Georgetown is so low mostly b/c of how others perceive the money management/endowment issues. Georgetown academics are consistently seen as among the most rigorous in the country, and we don't have grade inflation like at other schools(cough, harvard, cough, loL), so you have to work to get As.
So, I'd say that both schools are well rounded, though in various areas, one school is better than the other. It all comes down to what you want to study, experience, etc.

i'd have to give the edge to duke

Both schools are clearly in the top 10 or so of the major universities. Basketball is a big plus for Duke, but how about Washington D.C.? The nation's capital boats more culture and opportunity than any city in the world, and as JasonHoya notes, its right outside the Gtown gates. The US News rankings are bogus; I can't believe Wash U. St. Louis is at #11, while academic heavyweights like Brown (#17) and Georgetown (#25) have lesser rankings...it all depends what you want. you can play golf in february in durham and watch basketball religiously, or maybe go to a nightclub in DC after watching the supreme court in action... all depends on taste

sports don't matter.... at all.
You're asking this in the Georgetown forum, so of course many more people are biased toward Gtown.
Overall, Duke is better.

Duke's professors and graduate programs are leagues above Georgetown's, that is why Duke is considered superior academically. Furthermore, programs such as FOCUS facilitate a lot of student-faculty interaction that isn't possible at a school like Georgetown. As far as Washington internships, people at Duke don't have any trouble getting them.
