This is a very heated topic at my school. Some say Stanford is better, while others Duke. What do you think?

Stanford by far.
Any one else deserves a kick to the head.

who cares?

Yeah Stanford in 90% of aspects i'd imagine...

stanford fo sho

I faced the same dilemna. Duke is great, but it just doesnt compare to stanford

Depends, but if you care just about prestige then Stanford...though Duke comes close in some areas overall it isn't as high power academically (Stanford students more selective, larger reach and more influence, plus Cali)

I still can't believe the mush that passes for opinion on this board. 'Oh, it's in California so it must be better.'

^^It's the effect of TV, movies, and the rest of popular culture. Glamorous shows set in California: "The OC", "Laguna Beach", and many, many more. The only show I know of that was set in North Carolina was "The Andy Griffith Show/Mayberry RFD"

The person who deserves the kick to the head is any person, especially a high school student, who declares one college irrefutably "better" than another.

^agrees with Kemets simple yet profound statement :p

Stanford.....

who cares? its all in what you're looking for. Dont let the ratings fool u. You could go to Stanford (#3) and end up hating it just because the "ratings" are better. go to the school that fits you. In My case, i have to choose between NYU (the "better" school ratings wise) and Syracuse ( a great school with the better program that I'm looking for). To me, Syracuse fits me better, so although it's not as prestigious, ill probably go there.

Duke. Californians are awful. Or just awfully rich. Either way, Duke.

Yes, because someone actually posted that statement.
If you can find anything in this thread indicative of those words, I will delete my account right now. You can't. thethoughtprocess merely stated the geographical position was a bonus to the school, not that it justified his "thought process" in anyway. Stanford is a better school. PERIOD. I hate California, but that does not change the numbers. I have visited both, have relatives that attended both, and have talked to administration representatives from both. Stanford is the better school.

Look at all the things that matter in evaluating a school. Endowment, graduate school placing, yield, research, quality of professors, quality of peers, job placement, rankings (happiness of students as well as departments and overall), study abroad and internships, alumni, and envirnment.

If all of those numbers do not prove that Stanford is a better school, than even if Duke came out and said that Stanford>Duke you would not believe me. If you can not accept those facts, than nothing will ever change your mind.

This entire ****ing forum is subjective. This is a discussion. Under your logic, this community should not exist. I state an opinion supported by facts and first hand testimoney, and you reply with an ad hominem attack.

I am not saying Duke is a bad school, but the only manner other than saying my school is the best to develop and evaluate the quality of an academic institution shows that Stanford is stronger. We could go into the entire "Every person has different needs and blossoms in a different envirnment", but we are not because that line of thinking can prove that Wichita Community College is the same as Harvard. It is stupid.

Yes, some may find Duke to be a "better" school, but Stanford is, statistically and in the majority of other factors, the "better" school.

^Damn (10 char)

yeah dude, wow

I actually prefer Duke's area. I am a more conservative fellow and found the surrounding perfect. That said, the greateness of Stanford outweighed the location

I chose Duke over Stanford. AND I'm from California. If you care enough, you can PM me about it. Some of these posters are so catty.

Why wouldn't a Californian, particularly a Northern Californian, who wants a different atmosphere for college leave the state (and say, go to Duke?)
