ringoffire = FAIL

belevett,

Nobel laureate Peter Agre is still officially on the Duke faculty, but since 2007 he spends the majority of his time at John Hopkins (in Baltimore, MD) running their malaria research center, and teaches no courses at Duke.

Personally, I think someone who teaches no courses at a school and who also spends more than 80% of his time working out of state for another university shouldn’t count as part of the “faculty” of a school. Of course, that’s just one person’s opinion.

P.S. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences

Hah… That must have been your mom at kentucky kommunity kollege. The kids my mom was tutoring may have been tutoring some kids who tutored kids at the kommunity kollege, though.

Poor Duke is getting bashed left and right. Despite my love for UNC, I’ll respond.
Well, that’s a bit vague. What kind of “opportunities” does Stanford offer that Duke does not? I mean, are you talking about social opportunities (e.g. FMotQ), academics (e.g. more/different majors), or something else entirely?

Come on. Give us concrete examples. I’m not impressed.

As I mentioned way back in the beginning of the thread (or perhaps another thread, they all seem the same), Duke is superior in several fields of biology – ecology, botany, marine biology, primatology/biological anthropology, etc.

Biology does not consist entirely of genetics and molecular biology, although many narrow-minded posters seem to think so.

There are many opportunities Duke provides that Stanford and even HYP don’t provide.

Here’s an example:

^^^^I’m impressed. That’s pretty good for a school with a 4.4 PA review on USNWR.

Actually Stanford does offer many funded fellowships for the summers and breaks. Check out the website. [Welcome to Haas Center for Public Service: Stanford, CA.](http://haas.stanford.edu/)
And also various grants to fund arts and research by students. They also provide summer jobs on campus and subsidized or free housing for summers.

@ principalviola:

I bet your mom “tutors” a bunch of kids! lol

Funny, that’s the “argument” Duke-homers use all the time to “justify” picking Duke over schools like Cornell, Northwestern, UChicago, WUSTL, JHU and even Penn.

Duke has HYP level faculty and financial resources?

That’s new to me.

Now, no one is saying that one can’t get a great education at Duke (as well as at other schools that, btw, Duke-homers put down) but by certain factors, Duke (just as the other schools) is not HYPSM w/ regard to certain things.

What was truly imbecilic was the “argument” that Duke had better weather than Stanford (again, no one is bashing the school, Duke, after all, is a very fine school, but the antics of certain Duke-homers, otoh…).

Despite the fact that Duke doesn’t even offer a major that the OP is interested in and is very weak in nanotech research, some of the Dukies like ringoffire would say anything just to sell the school.
