Duke vs. UChicago, which do you think I should pick and why?

I am from the Duke area. Proximity to family would be a serious downer in college. Otherwise Duke would be a no-brainer choice for me but the family issue really throws a wrench in the situation. I cannot fathom living near my family again for 4 years. I would not be able to stomach it at all :( Is it worth going to UChicago simply for that? I love Duke in every other regard. UChicago is a love-hate place (and I'm not really the type to love it).

Please help!

Don't pick Chicago for the sole reason of getting away from your family. College is no use if you won't enjoy yourself.

Maybe a pro/con list would help. A bit juvenile, I admit, but you seem torn and desperate for an answer.

I suppose you are right. I will give it some thought.

My family is considering making me live at home and commute to Duke. Even if I were able to convince them to let me live on-campus, it would be a nightmare because they would remain highly involved in my life (and would force me to continue high school and family activities).

I fell you.. one reason i am not going to even apply to REED is because i do not even want to be anywhere near Portland (or family) during college.

Go to Duke. There are plenty of people here from Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill (like my roommate). There's a lot to do, and once you're on campus you might as well be hundreds of miles away from home. I live ~2 1/2 hours away, and I've only been home on breaks.

Duke requires you to live on campus for the first three years.

I live 30 minutes away and have for years. I must say, the area sucks. I am a big fan of cities and love Chicago especially.

suck it up and get along with ur family. you will end up having to get along with them anyway in the future

Yeah I am choosing Duke. If the only con is family, then I think it's the right choice...
