I nominate you to be the official Mark Twain Quoter here on CC. You can never have too many of those quotes. :)

Beyphy you always seem to be level-headed one. Thanks for shedding some wisdom and calling out hypocrisy.

Well, you got me there. Of course slight variations in the US News rankings and PA survey from year to year are the ultimate authority on the relative academic excellence and reputations of top universities. How could I have missed that???

And with that, I’ll invoke the latest Mark Twain quote courtesy of our good friend beyphy, and take my leave of this “discussion.” :)

That is, unless there’s another Berkeley reference. :p

I am very sure if we average out all the department rankings on USN, Penn would be ahead of Duke. What graduate program prestige are you referring to? Business? Wharton by a mile. Med school? Penn. Law school? Again Penn…these are just on top of my head. The difference is on CC, there seems to be more Duke boosters cherry picking than others to show that it is better than other peers (I could be wrong but it just seems that way and it seems like some others feel the same). I am sure if this were Berkeley vs Duke, they would be quiet about PA or they would dispute its relevance. It would be interesting to look up some of those threads in the past to prove that I am right. :)

Now that Duke research funding is up there, they love to throw that around. Never mind the fact that most of the funding belongs to bio/medical-related research. Those two fields happen to be the most expensive and Duke happens to be good at these two but not as strong in some others. For example, its engineering or physical sciences are still not top-notch but Duke boosters would try to make it sound like the research funding reflect the whole spectrum of academic disciplines.

“And by the way–the mythology to the contrary notwithstanding–Robert Morse, the guy who actually runs the US News college ranking, is NOT a Penn alum.”

Ok, then Penn Alum gets only a bit of the blame for owning the mag. Based on the way this thread is going, the generation of kids putting too much faith in the rankings seems to continue onto next generation.

Wharton is a notch better than Fuqua for sure but Penn Med is not better than Duke Med and Penn Law is not better than Duke Law. The Residency Ratings for the medical schools are very similar and the Law Firm/Judge Rankings for the law schools are on par.

The average MCAT and LSAT scores for acceptance to Duke/Penn Law and Med are pretty similar.

I know Penn’s Law and Med schools are ranked a few spots higher than Duke’s but I’m not sure what criterion that USNWR employs that is causing this.

ATL ranks both universities well, but there is a small gap between Penn Law and Duke Law. Penn gets around 80 points and Duke gets a bit above 75.5. Again, both schools are excellent, but Penn has the slight ranking advantage.

both awesome schools…cant really go wrong with either
