Amused: It is to my understanding that you're currently a student at Duke University. What reasons made you recommend Vanderbilt over your own school, Duke? I'm curious because I plan to apply to both schools this upcoming year.

I think the money differential> prestige differential

it depends what you want. southern hopsitality? or to save money? or better chances in the future? personally i'd pick duke, but vandy's good too. sorry, i bet that was no help whatsoever. :)

"There is a significant difference. The difference between Harvard and Duke is much less than Duke and Vandy."

I highly doubt this. I attend Vandy and I know a bunch of kids who turned down Duke because Vanderbilt was a better fit. I doubt many kids turn down harvard for Duke.

well, on cc there's a guy that turned down Pton for Duke

not saying it doesn't happen, just that its not that common

anyways back to the OP, duke does have more prestige. but is it that far superior where you should have to take out a bunch of student loans? I don't think so.

Actually, I know a number of kids here who are not on any scholarship who got into Harvard (or Yale, Stanford, or Princeton) and came to Duke because they liked it better. I also know more than a few kids here who turned down full or partial scholarships at Vandy for full-tuition Duke...

For really southern people, I think Vandy can sometimes be a better fit, though.

incollege88, im from New York. I don't think you can get much Northern than that. I think the whole Vandy southern thing is completely exagerrated. Some people make it seem like northerners will be out of place, which isn't really the case.

Heres the geographic diversity:

Also -- your friends that turned down the scholarships probably didn't NEED the money. Not everybody has that luxury...
