I am a premed student and very confused over which school I should choose. I had this same problem when wanting to apply early to either of these schools. I applied early to Duke and was differed. I was extremely excited when admitted to Wash U and excited yet confused when admitted to Duke. I know both would be awesome for a premed student, yet I cannot make a choice. I would like to do a lot of research as a student and even get in some hospital hours.

I’m facing the exact same decision as you and will be visiting both schools within the same week in mid-April. I, too, am completely torn, but from my research, both will allow you to do research as an undergrad and shadow at the hospital. For me, it will ultimately come down to the social aspect on each campus.

collegehappy’s right: At either schools, both research and hospital (shadowing/volunteering) opportunities are plentiful. I don’t know much else about WashU so I won’t risk making any ill-advised comparisons, but either school would be great for premed. Take a look other aspects of the schools (both academically and socially). Are you thinking about any major in particular?

Both schools would prepare you well for medical school. I know students at Duke who have done research in the medical center during their undergraduate careers. I don’t know about WashU’s undergraduate research opportunities, but maybe someone on the WashU forum could answer that. It comes down to “fit” and what else is important to you.
