mathetc, I live in Southeast Asia and I can tell you that just about everyone’s heard of my almamater, Michigan, and just about no one’s heard of my son’s, Williams. But here’s an interesting anecdote.

The other night I went to an affair at the US Embassy. Most of the people there were foreign service officers plus a splattering of academics, economists and international business-types, like me. The conversation, as it often does, turned to our kids’ education and EVERY SINGLE PERSON I talked to had not only heard of Williams but agreed that it is a great school. So, yes, prestige is very much in the context of the beholder.

wang lee hom went to williams…any chinese here know who I’m talking about? lol

I know… But I don’t like him… :)

mathemenglish, you did not mention the financial or that’s not your consideration.

mathemenglish,

You cannot go wrong with this decision because Williams and Duke are extremely similar with regards to strength of student body and academic reputation. As a Duke student, I would like to vouch for Duke because I think it can provide you with a more “complete undergraduate experience” in terms of social life/athletics while still being able to give you the same educational resources as Williams. Class sizes at Duke are small as well and the professors are incredibly dedicated to teaching at the undergraduate level so it’s a non-issue.

I’m a FOCUS program alum and I strongly recommend it. My two FOCUS classes had about 10 kids in it and it was a seminar-style learning experience, which I enjoyed. I’m good friends with all my fellow FOCUS program peers and I have a wonderful relationship with my FOCUS faculty. Here’s the website for more information: [Focus[/url]

Also, I’m sure you’ve heard of DukeEngage, a specialized program which allows Duke students to do volunteer work anywhere in the world. Duke completely foots the bill for its participants and its an opportunity more and more students are becoming interested in.

I hope you decide to become a Blue Devil!! It’s truly a one-of-a-kind school.:)
