I am currently torn between applying early decision at Williams or Duke.

At Duke, I have a mother who attended there and has done alumni interviews for 20 years and given money (not huge amounts) every year to the school.

At Williams, I have the support of a coach. I believe he could potentially be a big help help in my application if I decided to commit.

I've got SAT 720 verbal/700 math/730 writing and a 3.7 GPA, as well as good community service (4 different things with 10-50 hours each), four years of work experience, and not widespread, but extremely in-depth extracurriculars, as well as a lot of athletics (but no coach support at Duke).

Where does anyone think I have the better chance of being accepted ED, Duke or Williams? Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks oldfort. I think Duke is a better fit because of its size and the programs it offers, as well as the general feeling I got from campus and the people I met.

Is the William's coach offering an athletic slot or tip if you apply ED? This is different than "supporting" your application. A tip or slot dramatically increases your chances for admission.

There are significant differences between Williams and Duke - Williams is Eastern/Small/DIII/Rural and well, Duke is not - what are you looking for?

the Williams coach has not yet been clear about that unfortunately...I like Duke a lot for its size and location and the breadth of opportunities there, but was considering Williams because I really do like the school, and because I pretty much knew that I could get a tip from the coach if I applied there. I also knew that it would be in my best interest to take advantage of possible admission at such a great school. however, my real strong feelings lie with Duke, so I am trying to compare my chances at these two schools, and if it seems that Duke is as good a bet as Williams, I will go for it. Basically, I am interested in how duke treats its alumni and where my stats put me in that pool. thanks

Just so you know, coaches don't always have as much "tipping power" as they sometimes claim. My friend thought he was a sure shot at ucla because the coach there was wild about him but ended up disappointed when he got that rejection letter. Of course it could be a very different situation, and obviously the most important thing is what school is a better fit/ what area of study you are looking into
