Duke Young Writers Camp

Does anyone here know of this? Has anyone here attended this program? You don't have to submit a portfolio, and they have three sessions coming up this summer. I know it's not the TIPS program. I am very interested in learning more about it; it sounds like fun. Thanks for any responses.

If there are no writing samples required, I wouldn’t consider it at all prestigious.

There are some way better writing programs. Sewanne’s deadline is rolling along with Juniper.

A writing program that doesn’t require a writing sample doesn’t have admissions based on your writing ability, meaning you’ll be surrounded by kids whose parents told them to find something to do this summer. If you want a stimulating writing experience, try another program. If you want a likely enjoyable summer experience, this will probably cut it.

It may not need to have prestige; the experience may still be worth it. Does anyone have firsthand information?

Prestige is less the issue than quality. A good writing program needn’t be prestigious, but it should require a portfolio of some sort.

Of course, the experience outside of the actual writing may be worth it to the OP.

I’m just in eighth grade. I don’t need or want a “competitive” program, just a friendly postitive experience with writing time and feedback. Has no one here gone to this program?

I would encourage you to attend a summer program. My son had a terrific experience at the two he has attended. The first was the TIP creative writing class at Davidson; he had just completed 9th grade. It did not require writing samples but still was filled with bright, interesting kids who loved to write. It was very positive and supportive. Last year he attended the camp at Kenyon, which is more selective and “prestigious,” I suppose. Once again, filled with bright, interesting kids who loved to write. Also a very supportive, non-competitive atmosphere. (Kids being forced to attend a writing camp by mom and dad would most likely be enrolled in an academic writing program.) go for it!
