Duke

I was just wondering on your opinion of me as a candidate for Duke:
GPA: (UW): 3.92 (NJ private school)
ACT: 33 (Eng: 32. Math: 35. CR: 32. Sci: 32)
SAT II: Chem: 740. US Hist: 770
AP: Chem: 5. US History: 5. Eng Lang: 5
Unofficial class rank but in the top three.

I am from Canada and do not have American citizenship - hence the name.

Extra-Curriculars: I have played varsity baseball and hockey for all four years of high school. Additionally, I play club hockey which occupies 14 hours per week. I volunteer at my local hospital, nursing home, and hockey arena and have acrewed over 100 service hours.

I transferred schools heading into my sophomore year from Connecticut to NJ.

Senior year I am taking six AP classes (Spanish, English, Euro, Stats, BC Calc, and bio) and have kept up my grades.

If you are counted as international it will be significantly more difficult. Your grades and test scores are in dukes range, unfortunately you don’t have anything that really pops. If you applied ED I’d say its a low reach, but if you’re applying RD I’d say its a reach.

Chance me back? I’m applying to duke too!

I actually think you have a preety good chance at DUKE; However, its always a reach for those high quality schools. Cross your fingers and good luck.

I did apply ED to Duke and completely realize that when it comes to the upper tier of colleges it is really hit or miss (there are so many smart kids out there). Captnkirk, I was wondering whether going to a completely french schools for fours years and being on a top twenty team in the united states for hockey count as something that “pops”.

It’s a fact that being accepted as an international student is more difficult. If you get recruited for hockey that will definitely “pop” but it is unlikely that they will view playing on a good team any differently than someone who plays for a decent team. You didn’t list anything else other than sports and a few volunteering projects (which are good). You will be compared to the other students from New Jersey who have many clubs and leadership positions. It’s very competitive to be accepted out of New Jersey, and like I said nothing that pops ( GPA is amazing but not perfect, ACT is great but isn’t 35 or36, no real leadership positions) you are very competitive, but do have some things working against you. If you write great essays you’ll have a great chance. Good luck!

What’s your safety? I assume your safety is somewhere like Rutgers…
