Who here knows how hard it is to win the Duke merit scholarships (both the general ones and the in-state ones)? A girl at my school last year one an NC one with a 1440, ranked 3rd, but that seems unusual to me. Does anyone know what it takes? I know there are 20 top ones, 15 in-state (and SC), 15 Robertson, and about 7 Gates ones.

I know of 2 people who won one of the top ones. One was the first girl to represent the US at the Int'l Math Olympiad. The other one was a medalist at the Int'l Olympiad in Informatics.

my counselor's daughter won the Robertson Scholars when it first came out (about 4 years ago). she goes to Duke and was a finalist this year to win a Rhodes Scholarship.

It is very tough to win those. Check the Duke site. I think you can find info about some winners. You also could e-mail admissions or the head of the Duke Scholars prog and see if they would put you in touch with winners.

Fortunately, your ace in the hole is the Stanford admission. Presumably, whether or not you get Duke Scholars, you are in great shape for next year!

Thanks NS mom! No, I definitely don't expect to win one (In fact, I'm actually hoping I get to go to Stanford): However, this girl from my school with only a 1440 and lower rank won an NC one last year ... which I found odd. (She was an incredibly wonderful person though!)

The nice thing about the scholarship office (OUSF) is that they really don't give a crap about SAT scores and grades once you actually get to scholarship contention.
