Duke's Admission Site

Duke University Admissions: Transfer Students

Is it just me or does Duke seem a bit arrogant in their supposed academic prowess?
I was looking forward to applying there for fall 2012, but I must admit their statement that they will have no slots for junior transfers is kind of turning me off. I will be a junior transfer come fall 2012, so this applies to me.

Gosh, maybe it is me just blowing my bitterness off, but Duke is turning me off more and more everyday. If it weren't for their legit History department, I would not care much for the school. It just exudes a self-pompous air. I have looked through the Ivy admission sites, and they are a lot more humble than Duke's it seems.

Well, I guess, I am just declaring, I have finally decided to let Duke alone. Besides, it opens up one of the three slots of schools I will do transfer apps for. Brown is already on that list! Brown and Duke. Humble and Arrogance. Same thing.

Transfer spots for very selective schools like D are based on the number of students that leave, which is generally relatively small. They don’t have control over that, and it seems extremely reasonable, nice even, for them to inform students that they won’t have spots so that they don’t waste their time applying. Much better IMO than the year that H decided they weren’t accepting any transfers (due supposedly to a shortage of housing) AFTER the transfer admissions had opened. They refunded application fees, but not the cost of sending transcripts & test scores, not to mention the time spent on applying.

I personally don’t see anything arrogant about the D transfer website, and I’m not a particularly big fan of D in general.

I agree with entomom. I actually had Duke as high reach for my transfer list but after reading the statement, I will not apply. There’s always the possibility a few spots can open up, but the time it takes to make an application competitive is not worth the possibility of a spot or two. I’d rather focus my time and energy on a school with a greater rate of transfer admission.

I can see where you guys (and gals) are coming from. Maybe it wasn’t their intent to be arrogant, but to inform. By the by, I still believe the school is slightly arrogant.

Don’t mistake my inner feelings with reality, especially when they are one and the same haha. Duke is a great place academically, I am not saying it is not. I just feel as though, this might turn off special types of applicants. I understand that they want strong numbers though. This is why I love admissions decisions like Brown’s. While, yes, they want the numbers also, Brown presents a picture where they truly want a well-rounded kid. Brown is better at that than Duke. Duke does have its own strengths though!

you might want to visit brown first before you apply

i am here right now for a summer program, and it’s not as great as it seems
providence is a crappy area in general and a lot of the houses around brown are decrepit. plus there are a lot of hipsters here

It cannot be any crappier than the area where my current school is, one of the poorest in the country. I am not too worried about the area, for I am sure if this was the case nobody would attend Yale. I am interested in what Brown’s academics and certain teachers offer. Though, it makes sense to visit before I apply. Your last sentence just had very much a positive effect on me haha.

man, I totally understand where you’re coming from with that! it’s kinda discouraging actually  I remember once reading on Duke’s website that they have the funniest, brightest, most talented blah blah blah students…

don’t sweat about it cuz there are tons of better schools out there , many are transfer friendly :D
