Duke's Awards

Does anyone have a listing/number of the prestigious awards won by Duke faculty or the prizes that have been affiliated with Duke (ex. Nobel, Pulitzer, National Book Award)?

not much really, except melinda gates (duke grad) got married to bill gates.

In reverse order, we've recently recruited Peter Agre, who won a Nobel Prize for his discovery/research into aquaporins.

Duke is still a relatively young/up and coming school. (Imagine how much better we're going to get!) Expect to see a great deal of accolades in the near future. Prizes that are more "instantaneous" have seen a recent spike, as Duke students have done very well, for example, in the Rhodes Scholars area.

Still, remember that while we have very brilliant faculty - the kind of people who are cited in textbooks and such - make sure to notice that that's not the only thing involved in your undergraduate education.

Duke is 7th in the nation for the number of Rhodes Scholars produced (lagging behind only HYPS, USMA, and UVA). Duke does very well in producing Goldwater scholars (science/math); usually at least 2-4 Dukies win it each year. Duke also does quite well in producing Truman scholars, Fulbrights, etc.

3 Rhodes this year woo!

Also, Elizabeth Dole and Nixon for Law School (good/bad?).

And 2 of the Rhodes Scholars were in orchestra with me....kind of ridiculous.

lol. i'd say that's a pretty good prize indeed!

Alums William Styron and Anne Tyler have Pulitzers for fiction. I think Reynolds Price, an English prof at Duke, won a National Book Award.

William Rasberry, a PubPolicy Prof, has a Pulitzer in journalism.

As far as professors - Joe Porter - world renowned Shakespeare expert. Peter Burian - famous classicist (he translated the "Oresteia" we read in class). Mary T. Boatwright - expert in Roman history/Thucydides' narrative of the Peloponnesian War; she was on the history channel while I was in her class (I did the Athens in the Golden Age FOCUS). Judy Woodruff from CNN and David Brooks from NY Times are teaching Pub. Pol. classes at Sanford next year. Erwin Chemerinsky, American Constitution expert, taught a Poli Sci class this past year, and he was up in DC testifying before Congress for all the new judge confirmations this year. Dr. Samuel Katz, inventor of the measles vaccine is at Duke Med and is apparently very open to meeting with undergrads (See http://www.dukemednews.duke.edu/news/article.php?id=8189 for his accomplishments). This are only the few that I can think of at this hour, but most Duke professors are very accomplished in their field of expertise.
