I know that MIT coaches do not officially recruit athletes but can only write letters of support. Is it ill-advised to talk to different coaches at other schools (ex ivies) even if MIT is your first choice? Will MIT hear about it, deem it as bad, and disregard any letters of support? Sorry. I am a little paranoid.

Can they really write letters of support if they have never met you? (this is a serious question)

Assuming you have met him/her…

I don’t think it will matter, even if MIT did hear about it (which I doubt they would). Division III sports aren’t as weird about recruiting as Division I sports, and the coaches are used to students evaluating all their academic options.

And JSMGH, the coaches can write letters of support for anyone they’d like to support, although I think they do try to get as much information on the athletes they’re supporting as possible (e.g. game videos, etc.).

A few thoughts. MIT coaches can recruit … maybe not like Ohio State but they can develop relationships with recruits … they do not have much pull on admissions though.

There is NO issue what so ever with contacting other schools. As the D3 most schools rely heavily on recruits contacting them first … they have limited recruitiung resources; there are 30,000 high schools; and among all those students few are a match for their school (at the MIT end of the spectrum). Proactively contacting coaches at the schools in which you are interested can only help.
