How can I write a good essay when the college is asking such a boring question, like "In 300 words or less, explain why you want to go to ....University" . Has anyone here been forced to write something similar to this? If so, what did you do to make it interesting or spice it up so it's at least not EXACTLY the same essay as everyone else applying? (i.e. 'I want to go to ...University because I really like it and can see myself studying here for the next 4 years....)

I think its the most important thing a college looks at in terms of essays. My counselor told me that the most important thing to do is to mention some unique facts about the school. Look up information about the school and find things that intrigue you. Don’t do things that are common (Generous financial aid, school size). If you notice a lot of people mentioning that the teachers are really friendly, bring that up. If you notice that intramural sports are very popular, bring that up. Basically, bring up any fact that separates that school from any other school. This tells the school that you’ve done your homework about that school and shows you are very interested in it.

Angle is right, the reason colleges ask this is to find out if your passionate about their school.

talk to your friends who go there and see if they tell you something interesting,
then do what the previous two posters said
