Dumb question about tuition cost

College Search - University of California: Berkeley - Cal - Cost & Financial Aid

According to this it looks like UCB costs 30k tuition for out of state students, plus 15K more expenses.

I was doing some quick math in my head and it seems like it'd cost almost 200k for 4 years of college. But I learned that you can be qualified for instate tuition after being in the state for a year?

Registration Fees - Office Of The Registrar

Is this too good to be true? So it seems like after year one I'd be only paying about 25k total a year?

Enlighten me my friends.

Not true - undergrads are evaluated mainly based on residence of parents, not by your personal residence in California at a college.

[Legal Residence Information - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Residency/legalinfo.html)

nope, my OOS roommate considered it, but it’s not plausible. you also have to show financial independence and such from you parents to do that (meaning you have to get jobs that can pay for all your tuition and housing costs, and prove it to Cal). Easiest way is to just have your parents move to california, or suck it up. note that 30k tuition is slightly less than the tuition for private colleges (usually around 35k).

If this worked, colleges would only collect OOS tuition for one year from every student. That is why the rules are defined the way they are.
