<p>I think prerequisite courses can be included. It seems to me that the most logical way to calculate your major GPA is to average your grades in the classes required for your major. This presumably includes prerequisite classes.</p>
<p>Look at the degree chart for your major. All classes listed are considered part of the degree requirements for your major and are what gets included in your major GPA.</p>
<p>I would assume that classes taken to fulfill general university requirements that have a course number in one’s major department but that aren’t needed as prerequisites and aren’t included in the total number of courses needed for the major still should be counted towards one’s major GPA.</p>
<p>Likewise, I’d assume that related courses taken in departments other than one’s major department that are included in the course count for the major would also count for one’s major GPA.</p>

<p>At my school, Calc I (or an approved calculus cours) is a pre-req for Micro but not specifically listed as a requirement for an Econ degree. Since Calc I isn’t a requirement for the Econ degree, it doesn’t count towards the major gpa. I have seen instances where non-Econ courses are included in an Econ majors gpa, but those courses are almost always statistics classes and they’re pre-reqs for upper level econ classes and the stat classes are specifically required for an econ degree.</p>
