dumb question maybe

say your going to an out of state school, then get an offcampus apartment
do you qualify for in-state tuition then after some grace period or whatever?
if so the second half of college could become so much easier

Many people ask this question and the answer is NO. Think about it, if that were possible, there wouldn’t be any OOS students after the first year. While each state is different, most will not let you gain in-state residency while you are a dependent and if you are in the state to attend school, that time does not count towards residency. Do a Search on the FA and Scholarship forum where this has been discussed frequently. Here’s a recent one:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/676628-how-get-instate-tuition.html?highlight=in+state+residency

Go to the finaid.org website and type residency in their search box. That will give you links to each state’s residency requiements. They are all different, but the short answer is no, usually it won’t work. If you have a special circumstance (ie non-custodial parent resides in that state) you might have a better chance. Usually it only works out once you’re a grad student and have been instate for at least a year.
