Chess club is banned in my school so I'm starting an underground chess club (it's expected to have a lot of active members). If this succeeds, would it be a good idea to mention it in my college apps? Or should I not mention it because it's sort of illegal?

It's not illegal, it's just not endorsed by the school. As long as you don't use its resources/place a burden upon the school, it shouldn't be a problem. You could start it out-of-school and meet in someone's house or at the public library or something.

Chess is banned at your school? What kind of school do you go to?

Why would a Chess Club be 'illegal' just wondering...

If they caught u im sure they wouldnt expell u maybe a suspension...im sure u will be fine

It's probably illegal because it's classist...kings, queens, pawns, etc. Maybe they would let you play a nice egalitarian game like checkers if you eliminated the racist colors of the checkers (black and red) and made both sides use a neutral color like gray (the fact that it would get confusing if both teams had the same color is small price to pay for not offending anyone). And if you eliminated the move where you get to jump more than one of the opponent's checkers in one move (too aggressive for one checker to knock out more than one checker). And eliminated the move where a checker that makes it all the way to the other side of the board gets "kinged" (which is an elitist rule that allows a checker that has made a great achievement to be rewarded with higher status and power--much better to actually diminish the higher achieving checker's power like what is done with the graduated income tax).

^haha (10ch)

What school would do that?

Haha @ TourGuide446.

I go to Vestal, NY. It's banned because people apparently gamble on board games like crazy.

Is my venture worth mentioning in college apps?

Are you going to have gambling involved in your underground chess club? And you'll get a cut of the winnings...sort of a chess version of Tony Soprano? If yes, mention it, as it shows great entrepreneurship, resourcefulness, and thinking outside the box. But be sure to say on your applications that most of the proceeds are going to fight world hunger.

By the way, it's about damn time we got chess out of the high schools and the Starbucks, and into the smoky back rooms of saloons and windowless basements of abandoned warehouses where it belongs.

(And just between you and me, I'd like to lay 2 large on Timmy Chang to beat Jenesh Lishadi in tomorrow's match. I'm good for it. Trust me.)

Heh. Great idea. I'm not sure if I would go along with it, though, because I'm not sure if people would play to gamble. The school board banned all card and board games because people were gambling heavily on cards. They got rid of everything to eliminate any opportunities for gambling, and unfortunately the chess players at my school aren't gamblers. It would be really cool though if I could make money off of it and donate it.

I wasn't 100% serious about making money through underground chess betting and then donating the money to starving people. But if you can pull it off, you'll be quite a catch for a college.
