When I write essays for colleges, do I need to have a title? This seems to be a basic question, but I can't find the answer anywhere.

It depends on the writing prompt. If the writing prompt is about the most influential teacher or on your favorite book or some such, you do not need a title.

Most of the application essays I've read have not had titles.

Even if you don't need a title, you might consider putting one anyhow. What I would do is write the essay, then read it over. Sometimes a really good title will just jump out at you, and add a lot to the reader's understanding or enjoyment of the piece. If you can think of a title that adds something or frames your piece, put it, otherwise don't sweat it, since you don't need it. (Sundays with Morrie - good, My Most Influential Teacher - not).
