HI, I got accepted to Duqusene University in Pittsburg, PA and St.John's university in New york. (I got accepted to 6year pharm D, Program.)

I also got some scholarhsip money form both universitites.
There are the same amount ($9000 per year for 6years)

I have to choose between those two colleges.
and I don't know what to do.

I have not visited any of them.
The deposit date is coming soon.

Anyone knows about these two schools and two cities, Please give me some suggestions!!

I am desperate!

As for ranking, both are in the third tier. NYC is much better then Pittsburgh by far. St. John's is more prestigious (and heard of).

However, my suggestion would be to take a look at both schools. You could be a Pittsburgh guy. You could be a NYC guy. You won't know until you check out the cities or the schools.

Hey, I am from New York City and I have already sent in my deposit for St. John's pharm for Fall 2006. St. John's is in Jamaica, Queens. The school is a train ride away from Manhattan and a bus ride away from Flushing. There are things to do, so you don't have to worry about getting bored. From what I've heard, there are 300 kids in the program and I've been advised that St. John's accepts more people into the program than there are seats for so send in your deposit asap if you want to enroll! So far, I know about 6 people who are definitely going. Hopefully, we'll be classmates! =]

There is a very good chance that I'll be attending st johns as well (not for pharmacy though). I'm just wondering if you guys know anything about the social life there (Parties, clubs, greek life)? Maybe I'll see you guys in the fall.

Wendy88

Thank you for your reply. Is it really true that St. John's accept more students than there are spaces for them.
Then when do I have to send the deposits in?
I thought I had to pay by May 1st.
So I planned to visit both of school during my spring break which is 4/13~4/21. I was gonna pay after I visit them.

And how much was the deposit? Was it $750?

I am considering St John's too!

If you are planning to spend six years at a school (or even one or two), then be sure to visit both schools first before you make a decision. If your parents can't go for the visit, then you go alone. Stay overnight in a dorm and visit a class or two and a professor or two. Then decide. In the end you'll be glad you took the time, money, and energy to make an informed decision for you. With that said, here's a plug for Duquesne. It's a self-contained hill-side campus a stone's throw from downtown Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has a ton going for it (restaurants, cultural scene, two universities - Pitt and Carnegie-Mellon a few miles away, etc.).

Haksun, the answer to your "dilemma" is, what motivated you to apply to each college the first place.

Haksun87:
There's a Student Acceptance Day on Sunday, 4/2. It'll be cool if you can go see St. John's then.

On St. John's Acceptance letter, it states, "There are a limited number of seats in our Pharm. D degree program. To ensure your place in our freshman class, please complete and return the enclosed Enrollment Confirmation form..." They didn' mention a May 1st deadline. On another page for Enrollment Deposit for Pharmacy, it said, "To ensure your place in St. John's entering class for Fall 2006, please forward your non-refundable enrollment deposit as soon as possible." I think it must mean something to send the deposit in as soon as possible.

Believe it or not, some people from my school haven't even heard back from St. John's (they applied to their pharm program) so they might still be accepting more people.

Oh yea, did you apply to Northeastern's 6year pharm program? I just found out I got in today and although I did send in my deposit for St. John's, I don't know which one to choose. Boston seems so attractive. =/

To the person who asked (Sorry, I can't remember your username):

There are clubs everywhere in Manhattan. It's a big social scene and from what I've heard and seen, St. John's is pretty big on greek life. St. John's is pretty diverse (it's NYC!) so you'll meet all different types of people.

I feel like I'm advertising here, lol. Anyhow, just keep in mind that I'm only a prospective student!

Lonestar dad is right about Pittsburgh. I love NYC and can completely understand how it is an exciting place to go to college. But the comments regarding Pittsburgh and being bored are totally inaccurate. Duquesne is a short walk from both the South Side, a very hip nightlife area, and a short walk to the Symphony, Opera, Theatre and Jazz district. Beside, as a pharmacy major you will have a workload that will require you to focus on your studies. Visit the schools and you may find that Duquesne and Pittsburgh are a great match for many students.

Pittsburgh is AMAAAAAAAAZING.

:)

I frequently see Duquesne kids at Upitt and CMU parties. We're pretty much one big happy family if you know the right people. Duquesne has REALLY HOT girls though so that's definitely not a bad thing. I love Pittsburgh a lot since I love college towns so I would definitely visit both schools.

Duquesne does get some pretty good job placement despite it being a tier 3 so I would ask them about that while you're visiting. If you have any more questions you can PM me as I know quite a lot about the colleges in Pitts.

Wendy88 :
So did you deposit your money already?
I also got into Northeastern and I like the boston and all
but their tuition is so high I can't afford it! and they did not even give me any scholarhsips too.
So, do you know how diverse is St.John's?
and is it safe? I heard Queens is very dangerous!

Hey Haksun87! Yes, I've submitted my $750 deposit last week. I have also received my financial package from them. They are so generous! Gave me full aid. =]

Northeastern has always been my 1st choice due to its location. (I've been in NYC my whole life) But yea, they're really expensive but I have to see their financial aid first.

Stats from College Board:
<1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
17% Asian/Pacific Islander
17% Black/Non-Hispanic
14% Hispanic
36% White/Non-Hispanic
3% Non-Resident Alien
13% Race/ethnicity unreported

As for the pharmacy group, it's predominantly a mix of asians and pacific islanders/Indians.

You can't just say that Queens is dangerous as it is a big borough. But to be honest, Jamaica isn't the safest place to be. When I do attend next year, I would most likely not hang around that area except on-campus. I think I would rather go to Flushing or Elmhurst (other parts of Queens) or take a train to Manhattan. And I'm sure there are securities to guard the campus.

But you might find my opinions subjective so it's best that you visit the school asap. =]

Remember St. John's is a catholic school so you'll have to take theology classes! And freshmen are also mandatory to take "Discover New York" during their freshmen year.

Wow, I sure type a lot here, hah!

WOW!

That is a diverse school.

It's a shame the colleges I'm going to apply to aren't so colorful...
