Duren or San Jacinto

For a freshman which of these two dorms would be more preferable?

On the one hand San Jac is close to the athletic center, but is Duren better for proximity to first year classes?

My daughter is OOS so she will get a random roommate and she is not going to know anybody. She is personable and outgoing but Texas is a long way from TN and we're a little worried about all of this.

San Jac is definitely the better choice. I am a freshman right now and I live in San Jac and absolutely love it. It is VERY close to Jester- where the majority of freshman live. It is also right across from the Rec center, stadium, has its own cafe downstairs which has very very good food, close to the main library on campus, has a Forty Acres and West Campus bus stop right in front, and is close to Gregory gym where most people go to work out. The problem with dorms like San Jac and Duren is that they are not more social since they have private baths, but I also know people who live in Jester who have community baths and where there are a ton of first-year students that also say it’s not very social. But San Jac has a ton of activities every week where your daughter can go and meet people in her dorm. Me and my roommate have made friends with a couple of our neighbors, because the first week, everyone’s looking to make new friends, so just tell her to keep an open mind and meet everyone she can in those first few weeks on her floor and she will be fine! Hope that helps!

texas2013…
when did you pay your housing fee?
im about to be a freshman at UT and want so badly to get San Jac. Me and my roommate both picked it as our first choice and were wondering what our chances are getting in

Thanks!
We thought Duren would be too far away from the gym and that it wouldn’t work.

For second and third choice, do you have any thoughts on the other dorms besides Jester?

Chinexican, I paid my housing fee around mid-late October. I know a friend who did it in Decemeber though and is living in San Jac now… good luck!

Curlytoons, I think Moore Hill also has a pretty good reptuation on campus. They are very close-knit there and it is right across from San Jac so it has a very good location as well. I would put Duren as another choice too just because it is a very, very nice dorm just like San Jac, the only downside is that it does not have a good location like Jester, Moore Hill, San Jac, Prather, Brackenridge and Roberts. I can definitely say do not choose Littlefield or Kinsolving. They are not good dorms. Also Jester can either be a very positive or very negative experience… it has a bad reputation but I know a few people who have really enjoyed it.

Hope that helps!

Curlytoons, try not to worry! Your D will do wonderfully. Although my parents weren’t far away, I did not know a soul in my dorm, even my roommate. The first night, I cried. The next day, I met the girl who would be my best friend and future roommate. The next four years (well, six counting my master’s degree) at UT were awesome!

Thanks to you all! I didn’t have these worries with my son, as he went to my alma mater, UT Knoxville, and it’s a short drive away.
