Dykstra or Hedrick?

Which res hall do you think is better between hedrick and dykstra? why?

I'm going to UCLA this fall and my housing offer is for dykstra but i think i want to apply for a CAR to switch to hedrick.
I read through other threads about pros and cons for both places and it seems like dykstra is very old, the bathrooms are horrible, and the walls are thin, allowing more noise to be heard from next door rooms. BUT lots of people said they have the BEST food and you don't have to wake up early to go to class since it's close to campus. Also in my housing offer, it said people in dykstra will have to move out sometime in the year to De Neves due to construction. Would it be hassle to move in the middle of the year?

I'm thinking about switching to hedrick because it was just renovated and incoming freshmen this year will be the first to use it, plus my friends got hedrick as well, and i don't think i'll mind the long distance from the campus. I heard the food is pretty good too and since it's way up the hill, the dining area isn't crowded as opposed to the dining areas near dykstra and de neves.

so please give me your thoughts/opinions about these halls!
thanks!

Anybody can eat in De Neve, so I don’t really think that’s an advantage for Dykstra. Even if it is, Hedrick is closer to every other place to eat on the hill. It’s at most an extra 7 or 8 minute walk from Hedrick (much smaller difference if you’re going to North Campus), so it won’t make much difference to your sleeping. There are times though when being closer is a small convenience.

If you’re switching places over break, then it won’t matter much since you’ll take most of your stuff home anyway. If you’re changing in the middle of the year, yes it’ll be a hassle.

It’s really personal preference and how important you think each aspect is. Dykstra is ideal if you want a social opportunity, but I’m sure Hedrick will be pretty social too considering most returning students stay away from it.
The difference between Dykstra and Hedrick is like 5-7 minutes max for walking to campus, so unless you really want every last ounce of sleep you can get it’s not really a big deal.
De Neve does tend to have the best food, it’s pretty consistently good. However, like you said it is really crowded there all the time. Hedrick on the other hand is hit or miss (I had amazing tamales there last night but other times there is nothing good at all) but is empty and easy to find a table and get food. Once again, the walk to the other dining halls will be like 5 minutes so it’s not really that big of a deal. You probably will end up eating at the closes one though out of laziness.
I do think it would be a hassle to pack up and move in the middle of the year, but it won’t be too horrible because unlike move-in day there won’t be a ton of traffic to deal with. Also, staying in one of the newly built dorms would be nice because they’ll have the closeness of Dykstra but the quality of Hedrick.
It’s really going to be a personal choice. If you want to live with your friends and want a nicer dorm, go for Hedrick. If you want a very social experience in a dorm that is slightly closer to campus, go for Dykstra.

DYKSTRA hands down.

I was on Dykstra 3 freshman year and had an amazing time. The way the rooms are setup (facing each other and one long hall way/one lounge) make it the most social place on the hill easily. sophmores/some juniors are filling up the refurbished halls, which isn’t a good thing for a freshman because they tend to stick to their own friends already.

de neve>>>>>hedrick in terms of quality of food. its not even close. the selection is smaller and the food…not as tasty at hedrick. I had beef sushi there my freshman year…I didn’t come back until the last month. Also, even if the walk is an extra 8-9 minutes…you’ll be glad you won’t have to walk that distance on a hot day.

Yes, Dykstra is old, but that’s what brings the students together…it something everyone bonds together with. A good chunk of my floor from freshman year, (~40 people) still hangs out regularly…I made my best friends from UCLA thanks to Dykstra.

It would actually be a good thing if your friends are in a different dorm…it would force you to branch out and meet new people. I knew people who clung to their friends from back home…needless to say, they didn’t hang out with anyone during the year and missed out on a lot.

IMO its the perfect setup. You can make friends/meet tons of people fall quarter, and then move in the newer dorms (which are still very close campus) once you’ve settled in.

thanks for your input everyone!

AFAIK Dykstra is closing at some point during next year, and all people living there will be moving up to Hedrick. Not sure of accuracy tho.

Does anyone know what type of buildings the Dykstra residents will move into after fall quarter? I was under the impression we’d be moving into plazas since the new buildings will be in De Neve, but my friends told me they were res halls!

^i heard someone say were moving into residence halls, makes sense though because ucla said the price would be same
