Dyslexia and SATs

My son took the SATs.. He scored in the 90% for Math, yet only the 23% for reading part.... He is very dyslexic, yet has a GPA of 3.85 and takes AP classes. He is in the honor Society (was president of his chapter too) He is an excellent student that works hard and is VERY smart....

How do we get around the reading part of the SATs? He is hoping to go to NYU, UCSD, or one of a few other top notch school...

We've worked very successfully with students with severe dyslexia on SAT prep. What kinds of accommodations does your son have? Extended time? Does he have a reader, and or scribe? How did he do on the writing section?

Yeah, I thought you had the option to request extended time for certain cases with dyslexia as one. And good luck to your son with his college apps.

he scored 450 on writing (range is 410-490) and an 08 on essay. He got a total score of 1611. He didnt request any special accomodations for his test. Having dealt with this for years he thought he could do it without any special requests, which obviously was not the case. He will try the ACT in a few weeks.. How do you go about requesting special accomodations?

The web sites for SAT and ACT spell out the procedure for special accommodations. It takes some time to actually get them, however. I've also heard that it is much harder to get them now for the SAT than for the ACT. People who have been successful usually start months in advance.

You have to submit current evaluations, any IEP, etc. If your son isn't getting a particular accommodation now at school it is doubtful he would get one from SAT or ACT.

Complete the first section of the student eligibility form, and turn it in to your school guidance counselor - the form is available at http://www.collegeboard.com/ssd/prof/index.html

If you start the process now, you should receive a decision in time for the October test, or at the latest, for the November test. That being said, you really have to start now.

Do your son's teachers allow him any additional time on tests? Does he sometimes need to have texts read to him?

Hi, If you'll go to Post 27 on the PSAT Accomodation thread at the Learning Differences board, merlinjones has posted links to the criteria for having accomodations granted for ETS testing. Although there are some horror stories with students who clearly need accomodations being denied, there are also some students who have gone through the process and received accomodations on the thread. Take a look, hope it helps.

a guy walks into a bar.....a Dyslexic guy walks into a bra....

i know someone who got unlimited time, maybe you could consider that.
