I'm thinking of purchasing the Kindle for college. Is this a good idea? Do colleges/professors force you to buy textbooks?

Most textbooks are not available in ebook form

Theres a few textbooks right now availalbe in ebook form. Its only going to grow in selection over time, but right now its not going to be your main source for textbooks. I’m currently taking an online course and using an ebook instead of an actual textbook. Its nice to not have to carry a book, but it makes actual studying and gathering information from the book alot slower because of the page turn rate. Also, your not going to be able to sell back the ebook when your done with it which is lame, though you hardly ever get a very good deal when you trade books back in. A kindle would be a nice choice if you’re a big reader though. Its a good way to take a break from school work and just relax. I wouldn’t buy one, however, if you want it to house all your school textbooks. Too small of a selection of school books, Too small of a screen, and too slow to be used effectively.

I will be reading many books for leisure as well, but if there are e-books available online, I’ll get them. An example would be getting a textbook for a history class. Those e-books would make sense since all you’re doing is reading the text. But my main question is, do professors require you to buy a textbook? (sorry if this is off tangent)

I’ve never seen them require you buy the physical book. If there is an ebook alternative, they’ll most likely tell you about it anyway in the syllabus.

Amazon is now offering textbook rentals through it’s kindle store. Up to 80% off retail. We might see a large selection pop up if this does well.
