My son got an e-mail today from admissions saying they had done a preliminary review of his app and to please keep Davidson in mind. Is this sent to all students or is it a good sign?

I think it’s a good sign! I doubt they send those to every applicant.

I got a very similar message, only in the mail. Hopefully it is a positive sign!

did he apply ed or regular?

He applied regular, but I believe all his materials are in.

good sign
i didn’t get that :(

Don’t worry at all. It may be they plan to send notes to more people as they review more applications! And even if they do send them to a smaller percentage of people, it means many more people get accepted that didn’t get a note.

paigewg, did you apply regular or ED 2?

Emails like this one are almost always a good sign. “Likely letters” they are called. They tend to be send out two weeks or so before the decisions officially come out, and are often send exclusively to regular decision candidates. Likely letters are essentially part of an early campaign to protect the school’s yield rate. Harvard is especially infamous for its likely letters that it sends to athletes and a small handful of star students.

Not getting a likely letter does not mean you’ve been wait-listed or rejected. If colleges sent likely letters to everyone they were probably going to accept, there would be no point to sending out official letters of acceptance.

I got a handwritten note in January - sounds like something similar, but I can’t tell if its a “likely letter” or just something sent to all applicants. It seemed pretty generic …

Definitely not sent to all applicants, as my daughter did not get a handwritten note!
