My S18 received an email today from BU saying that he is one of a “select group of high-achieving students” who could benefit from opportunities offered by Kilachand Honors.
I am curious to know what this could be based on. Does anyone have any ideas? He does have high stats, but didn’t check the box for schools to get his SAT scores.
We write off most outreach as the oft-mentioned rejection bait, but I am wondering how others who received this email look at it and whether it actually holds any weight as indicating anything about his possible eligibility for the program.
Hi pickledginger, I am a senior with high interest in BU and I actually received the same letter a little while ago. I am not entirely sure, but I believe they send it to students with scores above their school average (top 50%)(at least that’s what I have heard). Although it is only sent to certain students, it obviously does not in any way guarantee admission into the college. I personally do not have any interest in Kilachand, but if you son does, I would contact BU and definitely make his name and interest known to the school. I have to assume they weed out potential applicants by way of interest in the program. Hope this helps and if you have any other BU-related questions, let me know and perhaps I’ll have an answer!
Since it sounds like you have done a lot of research about BU, I’m curious to know what your thoughts are about Kilachand and why you do not have any interest in it.
Thanks! I actually got it off Google Images, not my own artwork haha. Yes I have done a bit of research on BU and there are a couple of factors concerning Kilachand. However, don’t let anything I say discourage your son from applying-obviously it is not for everyone!
As a film major, my time is quite limited Film and media majors are always notorious for being very, very busy so unfortunately I just would not have time for any of their opportunities (which are certainly wonderful) or an in-depth keystone project
In all honesty, I am a decent time-manager and a hard worker, but I do not think Kilachand would be the right fit for me in terms of rigor. Honors Programs in any schools are designed for the best and brightest, primarily those who not only work extremely hard but also can succeed in both the college and their major. Personally, I don’t think I entirely fit that profile
Unlike other schools I have visited, participating in the program does absolutely nothing for you financially.
(From BU’s site-“Tuition is the same for Arvind and Chandan Nandlal Kilachand Honors College students as it is for all BU students. Enrollment in the Kilachand Honors College will not affect the rate. Enrollment in the Kilachand Honors College is independent of scholarship awards.”
At other schools, Honor students often receive half or even full tuition as well as scholarships. At BU, the program may benefit you experience-wise, but at the end of the day it is just another optional program the university has to offer.
Once again, if you have any other thoughts or questions I would be happy to answer them!
Yes @TomSrOfBoston you’re right but my point in mentioning it was that unlike other Honors Colleges, acceptance does not automatically grant scholarships. While it is true many Kilachand students will in fact receive aid (as they are typically the top tier of admits), it is not dependent on their entry into the program.
@pickledginger My son opted not to apply to Kilachard because after looking online and visits, it just didn’t draw him in. He had no negative feelings about it just felt he didn’t want to apply and have the flexibility to do his own thing. I believe the Kilachard students can move into Kilachard Hall or select Kilachard floors in Warren Towers. To @purplepug13’s point, there is no scholarship automatically granted as with some other honors colleges. I did think that those who would be offered scholarships would be selected from that pool of students. However, to our surprise, not applying did not hurt my son’s chances of getting a merit scholarship.
Hi @pickledginger!! My D will be applying to the KHC at BU. I think it sounds like an interesting smaller community and a nice approach to fulfill required courses. I like that there are experiential opportunities and that there are housing options. It’s a heck of an application, though! My D is applying to the university, the honors college, and to the Trustees Scholarship, and there is so much for her to write!!! Everything is due by Dec. 1st - yikes!
