E7 vs. CS61A

I need to take one of these classes.
Can someone who has experience in one or both compare them? I am interested in knowing about things like difficulty and how useful the material is (like when doing scientific research).
I have taken AP CS AB, and Calculus BC in high school and did fine.

I’ve taken them both (taking E7 right now). 61A is much much harder than E7, and a lot less useful for practical stuff - but it’s still one of the best classes I’ve ever taken. Let me put it this way - 61A will teach you how to think like a programmer, E7 will teach you Matlab and some basic stuff in programming, but you’re much more likely to use that in research etc.

MATLAB is a useful thing to know, but E7 itself as a class is sort of a waste of time. I hear lots of good things about 61A, but like the above user said, Scheme isn’t very practical.

well once you take 61A, you should be able to pick up new programming languages relatively easily… and matlab is a very high level language that’s easy to pick up

LISP is pretty useful.

Matlab is way more useful for research and stuff.
