EA Acceptance

My daughter got her acceptance letter & a scholarship offer today. Anyone else considering DePauw?

Did she do the SmartApp?--how long did they take to turn her app around?

She used the common app, since she was using it for other schools. She got her app in at the end of November (just in time!).

I looked up the dates. She submitted all her supporting documentation in October, and she did an overnight after that. She finally sent her common app & supplement on 11/28 (she dragged her feet on the common app essay). Her acceptance letter was dated 1/5. If yours has taken a bit longer, I wouldn't worry. It's still early in January!

My d rec'd a postcard dated 11/9 indicating her app was complete. however, just before thanksgiving, we learned that her letters of rec were not in her file (they are not an official requirement--an "extra". after contacting her teachers and asking them to resend the letters, we were notified by admission dir the week of 12/18 that thye had rec'd all her letters and the quarter grades they had requested. he said the christmas break would slow things down. still haven't heard...a little anxious.i think my d should get based on published stats, but you never know i guess. what are your impressions of depauw?

I have been very impressed with DePauw. My D visited at the urging of an alumnus who knows her well. She thought D would really like it, and she did. We took a tour & she had an interview last February. As soon as we stepped on campus, we both got a good feeling. We had just been to another school the day before, and we didn't get the same vibe at all. In the fall, D spent a night in the dorms and had a great time. She loved the laid-back feel of campus. Everyone was friendly. They just hang out a lot, which D enjoys. They baked cookies --- D loves to do that! Lots of nice kids, lots of socializing, decent dorm rooms, etc. As far as academics go, she really liked the intro psych class she sat in on. Lots of professor interaction with the students, and prof was very interesting. She thought they had a challenging but not overwhelming workload. The campus is wired & everyone did their work on laptops. This made it easy for them to hang out together as they worked! The only thing that didn't impress her was the dorm food (decent, but not as good as some schools).

I know some people are concerned about greek life, but I attended a college with a similar greek life. It's not like larger schools --- it's more a group of friends you hang with. They all interact, so it's not exclusive. The sorority houses are beautiful!

D still hasn't decided for sure where she wants to go, but DePauw is on her short-list.

Do they offer Smart App to everyone?

I don't know if they offered it to everyone, but the deadline for using it this year has passed (I can't remeber for sure, but I think it was 11/15 or 12/1). It was essentially the same as the common app, but rather than writing a college essay, you could submit a paper/essay that you had done for a high school class). My D had already done her essay, but she used the Smartapp anyway because DePauw said they would turn it around the Smartapps in 6 weeks from receipt of a completed file. The turnaround time has been much longer than that, but her file was on hold for awhile because she asked them to wait until her Letter of Recs were in her file. So, still waiting. D is quite intersted in DePauw and she is ready for the wait to be over. She also wants to apply to two of the fellows program, but each requires another essay (she's already written 8 and she colllege "essayed out") which are due Feb 1 and she's going to be really bummed if she wrties the extra essays and then gets denied regular admission. She seems to be a good fit academically and extracurricular wise, but you just never know. With Smartapp, she thought she would know of she was in or not LONG befroe the 2/1 fellows deadline.

I filled out the commonapp and submitted it to Depauw sometime in November and got my letter today. Do you guys know about the difference in merit awards if you guys got any awards. I got the 13000 distinguished faculty award, but on their site they dont say the different awards and different money amounts they give out for merit awards so i didn't know if that was a good award for Depauw or not.

I have never seen anything either on their web site or in the lit we have rec'd that details the scholarship amounts.

I searched, and they don't list scholarship amounts anywhere. I am guessing that most don't exceed 1/2 tuition at this point, although I could be wrong. It just seems kind of standard to offer somewhere around 1/2 at acceptance for strong candidates. I am sure they offer more to applicants they know well and really want for some particular reason. The special scholarships require extra application. DePauw does not offer merit scholarships in excess of full tuition.

By the way, smartapp was offered to my D when she did an overnight visit in fall.

yay i got in

well, after a very long, kind of inexplicable delay my D finally heard from DPU today--she's in with a generous Trustee Award. i am sure that DPU will end up being one of her final choices. she just needs to figure out if she can handle a college with 2400 kids after she has attended a hs with over 4000. she likes alot about DPu--now, she has to finish the honors scholars and the mgmt fellows apps/essays by this thursday! ugh-

What is the amount of trustee's scholarship? Looks like Distinguished Faculty = $13000 and President's = $14000. It's not published anywhere, so we can at least document awards for future reference.

D got word today that the Presidential scholarship is now $17000/year. Good news, although it's because tuition was raised!

i was accepted into depauw a week ago, and i submitted my smart app a week before 1/15/2007, they extended the deadline to the 15th of january :), i did not really know how good depauw was, and on some websites it is rated as an overal #21 school (campusdirt.com), and the frats are awesome from what I read, I think I will attend depauw, I also heard that they meet 100 % financial need, and i also received te distinguished fac. award, they offered 15 k a year to me, thank goodness that i have some awesome recommendations lol

so kelsmom...did they originally offer a scholarship of $14000 and then recently raise it to $17000? That's nice. I wonder if they will do that for my daughter's $13000 Trustee award.

jah -

They increased my son's trustee award from $13k to $15k.

I guess I am wondering if my daughter's award will increase. her initial award letter is dated january 26th. DPU announced the tuition increase on 2/1. i am hoping that her award will also increase...the tuition increase is NOT insignificant. when did your son initially hear of his merit award and what was the date of the letter announcing the increase? i may just contact the school directly. anyone waiting on honors or fellows? my d is...honors and mgmt fellows. anyone feel like sharing stats? my d has a 3.9 weighted and a 32 ACT.

jah, I am willing to bet your son's scholarship is set at $13k, given the date of notification. Looks like it's Distinguished Faculty=$13, Trustee=$15, Presidential=$17.

Hopefully, this will help when people are searching for info on scholarships next year --- since I can't find anything on the website.

Now for the bigger question: Does DePauw stack scholarships? If you get a Trustee Scholarship, might they add a Bonner, or a Holton, or whatever else? I know Rector replaces others, since it's full tuition. Just wondered if it's possible to approach full tuition with a combination of scholarships. From everything I've read, full tuition is as high as it goes at DePauw (no "full rides" --- merit-only, anyway). Not that wishing will make it so ... but I love the fantasy of being able to send my kid to college AND continuing to afford food & rent!
