EA and the Mid-Year Report

In the portal to track my Harvard app, I see that the only thing missing is the mid-year report. I am fairly sure that the mid-year report is meant to be sent after first semester grades are posted.

As I am applying EA, should I just ignore the mid-year report for now and send it in December?

Student’s do not send in the mid-year report, as that is done by your guidance counselor following your first semester or 2nd quarter making period. All students accepted in the SCEA cycle are still required to submit a mid-year report, but it’s done after the fact – most of the time in late January, early February.

@gibby If students are accepted in the SCEA cycle and their grades drop a bit in the mid-year report, would that affect anything?

It depends on what is meant by “a bit.” Harvard has dealt with more than one accepted second-semestster senior. They accept a small dip. Maybe some As turn into A-s or even a couple of B+s. But newly-appearing Cs or worse will prompt a letter from Harvard asking for an explanation. A little letdown will go unremarked. Letting one"s grades fall through the floor will not. If you are accepted EA, do your best to finish strong.

What if your first semester grades take that dip? Like A/A-s to a couple B+s? How important would those be for early admission, given otherwise solid grades, ECs, etc.?

^^ SCEA results come out mid-December before Harvard gets a look at your mid-year report. However, your SCEA acceptance is based upon maintaining the same kind of grades that you had during your freshman, sophomore and junior years. If a mid-year report details a slip in grades from all A’s to A’s and a few B’s, probably nothing will happen, or at the most Admissions will generate a warning letter indicating any further slippage might result in being on academic probation during your freshman year, or that your application might be in danger of being rescinded if the trend continues. I imagine this is dealt with on a case-by-case basis, so there isn’t a blanket rule anyone give you.

Thank you for the insights.
