How do colleges handle deferred EA applicants in regular admissions? Are they reevaluated, or is there an assessment score or something similar from the initial review that is used?

This is entirely dependent on the school. It varies widely and you can’t make sweeping statements on this. Some schools you have a relatively decent chance of acceptance. Others it is a polite no thank you. See if you can get the percentage of students who are accepted during the Regular Decision round who were originally deferred from Early Action/Early Decision. You can also ask how that specific school reviews those applicants during RD and generally what it takes to make a deferral an acceptance in the Regular Decision round.

What I mean is, assuming that a deferral is in fact a deferral, how do they assess them to compare to the new applicants? Do they reread everything as if it is new, or do they have the EA deferrals pre-sorted and prioritized to make comparisons to the regular applicants easier?

Again, this is entirely dependent on the school. If their forum is active here on CC you might ask there. Rather then take second and third hand information your best bet is honestly to call the school and ask. It isn’t a secret. I’m sure they’d be happy to tell you. I’m not trying to be obtuse, it honestly is not a universal answer (if it was you’d have a dozen other responses) and I’d be lying if I gave you one.

BI’s right, check the school specific thread for the school. They’ll give you the right answer. You might wanna try emailing your regional adcom asking why, as well as giving a statement of reaffirming interest (I know U of C likes those statements).

We as outsiders, don’t know. And even if we did, what difference would it make???
