EA Chapman Dodge, class of 2017

Any other nervous/excited parents or students out there? Thought I would start a thread for those of us waiting to here results that applied early action to Dodge.

D is hoping for acceptance into Dodge for BFA Television and Broadcast Journalism with an emphasis on narrative. Also applied for honors.

Basic stats:
3.4 UW, 3.66 W (core only)
34 ACT

Also applied: USC, NYU, Emerson, BU, Drexel, UT Austin

im not a senior in high school but i am a transfer who got admitted to TBJ in the spring. excited to go there :D.

My son has applied to Dodge and hopes to major in screenwriting. When he and my husband visited Chapman and Dodge in September, they were told that although they hope to notify EA applicants by the end of December, that does not always happen.

And I’ve heard that the mail can take a week more from the time the admission status changes online from “Decision Pending” to “Decision Mailed.”

It’s a stressful time for everyone! Any advice from experienced parents on getting through this time of uncertainty?

Congrats andr3w on your acceptance. Where are you transferring from? Did you originally apply to Emerson?

Beaverdalemom, Chapman is the only school we haven’t visited. We will eventually but I’m not sure we can make it until spring.

I’m pretty sure screenwriting is her second choice for major. My opinion… writers are the ones that have the advantage for television and often end up being the creators/producers. She just finished writing a pilot for a sit com so I know she intends to continue learning and growing in that area.

If you don’t mind sharing, what is your son’s second choice for major? Where else has he applied?

I’m so happy that you started this thread. Chapman is my daughter’s dream school. She was accepted into the Dodge Film Summer Academy and that nailed it. Her other applications are safeties. Luckily she may have two things in her favor… Admissions came in and spoke to the Summer Academy group and said that 80% from that group were accepted last year. Also, her selected major, Creative Producing, had a 55% acceptance rate in prior years. It is probably more selective this year because Chapman is a rising star, especially Dodge Film.

Her stats are:
3.4 weighted GPA
26 ACT

We know that it will be really tough for her to get in and I also realize that there will not be any merit aid so we probably will not be able to afford the full ride.

I know that there are two time frames for Early Action decisions inside of Dodge Film. Film Production majors (the largest group applying) submit a video portfolio. Those decisions usually do not come until late January and into February.

All other majors inside Dodge are supposed to get decisions late December/January. I’m sure it all depends on how many applications they received.

Is there any way to find out if they got more apps this year? I’m guessing they did

Sounds like we have a bit of a wait then. Exciting!

Yes, Dodge Film is a rising star and very likely received even more apps this year. I’ll have to do a little research and see if I can find out just how many.

What is the creative producing program all about? That sounds interesting. I know many of the students start out in one area and then find their interests are somewhere else, such as moving from production to post production for example.

Well, hopefully your daughter will be accepted. It does sound like she made a wise choice attending their summer program. That is not always a factor with larger schools such as USC but I know it doesn’t hurt to show the interest is there.

Chapman is one of the generous schools so hopefully there is a way they can make it work out for you.

Unlike USC or NYU, Chapman has a separate major for television production, so in this case, she did not need to compete with the film production pool of applicants. I have no idea how competitive her major is or what percentage are accepted. Do you have any idea?

Creative Producing is a newer major at Dodge( thats why the acceptance rate is higher). I really like how they have broken the disciplines into discrete specialties within the industry. It will really be good when they get out to the job market. Creative Producing is more of the business side of production such as distribution, pre-production planning etc.

I had a long talk with daughter and she realizes that the director, cinematographer and other “front line” positions are very competitive. Job stats in our region predict that 25% of the jobs in Southern Calif will be related to the entertainment industry. We know that for every film or TV director there are probably 49 back office positions.

Her absolutely favorite part of the summer program was the live television so her 2nd choice major was the Television Broadcast.

Let’s hope they both get in!! I’ve already warned her that I do not want to pay $55k/year for Chapman when our local state college has a highly regarded film program for 1/3 the fist. But Chapman is just so wonderful and a perfect fit for her. Smaller school, more friendly …she just loves it there!!!

We didn’t bother with applying to NYU or USC because her stats are just not there. But she is struggling through the video supplement for Emerson and will apply Regular Decision.

Also applying San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton (very good television program) Montana State (newer program with some reputation and shes already accepted with scholarship) and Northern Arizona University (program with an emphasis available for Executive/Producer side of business).

Wesylan in CT is supposed to have a really good program also.

Infinity123, my son’s second choice major is probably creative writing; he will likely attend the University of Iowa (home of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop) if he doesn’t get into screenwriting at Chapman, since it’s difficult for non-Dodge majors to take screenwriting classes at that school.

He has also applied to USC. They accept only a very few screenwriting majors each year, but allow other majors to take those classes and possibly even minor in screenwriting. He is working on supplements for his NYU application, due Jan. 1. If he is not admitted to Chapman, he’ll apply to Loyola Marymount as well. He liked Chapman much better than LMU – he and my husband visited those two and USC this fall.

Every screenwriting application requires numerous (5 or 6) writing samples unique to that school, so each one requires a lot of time. He’s been writing some fantastic stuff and we’ve really enjoyed seeing his talent flower, but it will be a bit of a relief when it’s over.

Infinity123, I forgot to say thanks for your hopeful note on writers … I appreciate the encouragement!

Beaverdalemom, I can’t believe it’s already been a year since we went through the same thing you are experiencing now. The wait is torture. My S is a freshman at Chapman/Dodge, and did EA last year. I just looked at his acceptance packet, still here in the desk drawer in the home office – S’s acceptance letter is dated Jan. 19. If they told you Dec., well maybe they are planning to speed it up this year (lucky you!). As to how to bear the wait, well I didn’t! Chatting with other tortured parents here on CC helped a lot, though.

Yes, very exciting times. Fingers crossed for all of you!
DS is very happy at Dodge as a freshman. He received his acceptance last year in the last week of December–Digital Arts major.
Best to all of you. It’s a wonderful university and Dodge is even better than we expected.

LongRangePlan and gladiatorbird, thanks for your encouragement and good luck wishes! The process and the waiting are both harder than we anticipated, and I am really hoping Dodge admissions will speed things up this year, but who knows?

I can’t help feeling that Chapman’s complex system of sending applicants a letter that explains how to log on to a website that only reveals when your decision has been sent via snail mail seems a bit, I don’t know, out of date. But maybe I’m just cranky due to stress. :-)

LongRangePlan, what is your son majoring in, and how has his first semester at Dodge gone? I’ve heard such wonderful things about the school; now I’m hoping for wonderful news from the school.

Hi. Erin, senior, applying as a digital art major for EA. Worried. Haha. I’m mostly panicking about my GPA (3.3 W, 3.05 UW). Everyone says my portfolio and essays are excellent, at least… How much does that factor in to digital arts, does anyone know?

Hi Erin and welcome,
The portfolio and essays are very important and count for a lot. (The university also needs to see that you can do the other coursework, of course.)
Good luck, all fingers crossed! The waiting is difficult. Keep us posted.

Beaverdalemom – My S is majoring in television/broadcast journalism. He is really HAPPY. Lots of on camera/on mic work already, and really likes his adviser, who is also one of his professors, and is currently working in the field (TV business reporter).

S likes the dorm, likes the suite mates, has made a lot of friends, likes his classes (Dodge and others)…he is convinced he made the right choice and is truly excited to be at Chapman. He has decided to go back early after Christmas to do the optional interterm class, and it turns out just about all of his friends/roommates etc. are doing the same. I think that’s very telling!

^My son feels the same way. Absolutely happy, on all fronts. He is convinced that he made the right decision (despite how hard it was to say No to USC SCA). And so are we.

~Best of luck to all of you~

Portfolio is the most important factor for Digital Arts. The other academic achievements help as well, but portfolio carries the most weight.
