@TomSrOfBoston Hi Tom, You seem to be quite knowledgeable about NU, so I figured I should tag you in my post. I’ve been accepted through the EA round into the D’Amore-McKim School of Business for the Business Administration major. Is it possible for me to change my major within the business school now that I’ve been accepted? On my application status page, there is a link that says I can request to change my major, but I was wondering if that would change anything for my acceptance. If I did request a change, what would that process look like? Would I need to fill out another application? Thank you for your time!
@fuzzysocksandtea If you want to switch from the BSBA to the BSIB that may require an additional review. If you want to switch from say accounting concentration to marketing concentration that is just a clerical procedure.
@fuzzysocksandtea You should be able to try to change to anything via the Northeastern student portal via a major change or something along those lines. Most changes are quick and successful.
Has anyone received the admissions folder in the mail? If so, what state are you in?
Not yet. We are in Wisconsin
son was deferred- high SAT, high GPA, will be a National Merit Finalist- will that help with RD ?- are many NMS finalist rejected ?
Yes, in the past few years many NMS finalists have posted here as rejected.
@quinntheeskimo As with other deferred applicants I would suggest submitting a letter of continued interest or writing a supplemental essay through the portal.

[ b]Decision: Accepted **, awarded Honors Scholarship and entrance into Honors College
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1560 (800 math, 760 R/W), 20 overall essay score (took this in one sitting and didn’t bother to try and improve)
ACT (breakdown): Didn’t take
SAT II (subject, score): 800 Math II, 690 Chem
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/469 (although I’m technically tied w/ 17 other people or something like that bc my school doesn’t weight GPAs)
AP (place score in parentheses): Calc AB (5), World History (5), US History (5), Biology (4), AP Lang (4), Chemistry (3), Physics 1 (3)
Senior Year Course Load: Band plus 5 more AP courses
Number of other EA applicants in your school: IDK, but I’d guess probably 0. No one I’ve talked to has heard of Northeastern.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Nada
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): NMSF, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, some awards from my high school/college for maintaining a high GPA
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
Wind Ensemble (9-12) – section leader, 1st-3rd chair consistently (my school does seating placement a bit differently), received top award from regional contest
Marching/Pep Band (10-12)
Math Club (11-12) – VP both years
Piano Lessons – since 4th grade
I also do a lot of editing for people both on school essays and fictional stories they’ve written, so I included that as well.
I think I also included in this app that I spent a ton of time reading, lol
Job/Work Experience:
I’ve worked for my grandma’s business since I was 13, but it’s run out of my house so I can basically work whenever I want to, which is nice.
Volunteer/Community Service:
Nothing concrete; as I mentioned above I do editing for people, and I also help as a math tutor on occasion. I’ve done a few small volunteering gigs, but nothing official.
Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays: CA essay wasn’t spectacular in my eyes (and I didn’t have anyone look at it so I have no idea how good it was), but I think it gave some insight into how I think and how I’ve changed throughout the last few years.
Teacher Recommendation #1: Calc AB teacher from 10th grade. Didn’t know me very well but could speak to my dedication to math. He’s an experienced teacher so I feel like his LOR was probably really well done 9/10
Teacher Recommendation #2: German teacher I’ve had for 4 years now. Knows me the best of all my teachers, and I think he could speak to my character well 9/10
Counselor Rec: Only met her a few times since she became my counselor this year, but she seemed to like me, so it was probably pretty good 7/10
Other

Income Bracket Range: 100-150k
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):
Reflection
Strengths: GPA, SAT, LORs
Weaknesses: ECs, leadership
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m pretty sure it was the test scores that did it, but I’ve heard they also like demonstrated interest and I definitely did not do that, even though the school is one of my top choices. So idk. One thing that might have helped was that I applied to the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, even though from my app it was clear to see I’m fairly accomplished in math. That might have been something different/unexpected. In my CA essay I kind of touched on why it is that I’ve moved towards the humanities rather than the sciences, so it wouldn’t have seemed too out of place either.
What would you have done differently?: I probably would have tried to show some level of interest in Northeastern, but it worked out for me anyway so I’m pretty stoked.
Where else did you apply?
UVA – accepted
Waiting on Brown, Cornell, UPenn, Smith, Boston College, Fordham, UPitt, UW
**Other Factors: **
General Comments & Advice:
Just be yourself honestly. I didn’t expect to get in, but I was real on my app and I think that was helpful. I haven’t done anything super crazy with my life so far, but I didn’t try to paint myself as if I had.
how did i know if i got into the honors program. I didn’t notice anything about it in my acceptance letter but i just got an email about Honors welcome day? are they the same thing?
@FIFAIDS my daughter received that same email, then a correction email- someone must have made a big mistake. The second email was a correction and an invitation to the accepted students in health sciences, NOT honors accepted.
wow… I was excited for a second lol. Does anyone know how the honors acceptance looks like?
@FIFAIDS Honors would have been mentioned in your acceptance letter.

Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community Service: none on my application
Summer Experience: don’t think anything about this was on common app? a few classes
Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays: common app was about how I love math, not really creative/anecdotal, very direct/straightforward. But my counselor liked it and it hopefully conveyed my passion for math
Teacher Recommendation #1: probably pretty good but not super amazing
Teacher Recommendation #2: probably pretty good but I’d guess non-specific
Counselor Rec: really good, knows me well
Additional Info/Rec: n/a
Other
Date Submitted App: like two days before the EA deadline
U.S. State/Territory or Country: CA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White but part Puerto rican
Gender: F
Income Bracket Range: applied for FA but didn’t get any
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): no
Reflection
Strengths: I did a meeting with an AO who visited my area and toured the school, rec letters were good and maybe great, essay hopefully demonstrated passion, they may have liked my more “practical” course load (engineering and Solidworks classes), high EFC, NHRP, girl in STEM/engineering
Weaknesses: I have like no ECs, I’m super dedicated to running but not a recruit and since there were no supplements that wasn’t really conveyed in my app, no reported volunteering, senior course load not very rigorous
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: honestly idk. I got a scholarship for girls in engineering so maybe that helped. Or the high EFC lol. The meeting with the AO may have helped? See above strengths/weaknesses.
What would you have done differently?: I would have stressed more if I knew how crazy Northeastern EA was gonna be this year lol
Where else did you apply? MIT (deferred), WPI (accepted), Pitt (accepted), Hofstra, Cal poly SLO, San Jose state, Harvey Mudd, USD
General Comments & Advice:
¯_(ツ)_/¯
We spend the last week wondering why my high stats D did not get an invitation to the honors program. And then yesterday, she got the e-mail inviting her to the Honors Program Welcome Day. It took them over 3 hours to send out a corrected email that OOPS…she was actually not invited to the Honors Welcome Day but rather the Business School Welcome Day.
I know that mistakes happen…but it left a bit of a sour taste. She is deciding between Northeastern and some other really great schools (Georgetown, Notre Dame, BC). Mistakes like this don’t leave a great impression.
During the admissions process we got an email from NE saying they needed our son’s ss# and other info reentered online. Two hours later they wrote saying -oops- we don’t need it anymore…
Oh wow. These oopsie-daysie snafus don’t look very good on the school…
@DoingOurBest My son got the same Honors Welcome Day email and then the correction.
still waiting on FA… (
anyone else??
