I think it’s pretty clever. Props to whoever decided to do 12:17!

@jrklcrq
just like whoever it was said they’re just picking some arbitrary time anyway. will they be done by 11:59? 11:58? even hours doesn’t really make a difference. I’m a little annoyed that it’s so late (as in…not thursday when all of my ivy friends find out), but it is what it is. This is some potentially life-changing news and in the scheme of things, I guess, a few days here or there isn’t going to kill me. Haha I’ve been stressing a little less since I got into caltech (not my first choice) though . I’d probably still be all edgy too if not for that
edit: just looked at uchicago’s and its MONDAY. be glad we’re at least saturday

There is also the fact that 17 is Random Hall’s favorite number.

Wow… I didn’t want to believe it. I’m sorry to say this, but: Admissions I am disappoint.

Since when does MIT Admissions operate out of Random Hall?

@jrkrclq
Regardless of why they picked that time, it’s not like they’re going to change it because someone on CC doesn’t like it. Just be happy that we actually have a date. It’s a lot easier to look forward to a set time than to something that’ll just happen “around Dec 15th”. Oh, and thanks for the hints MITChris. Most of the schools I’ve applied to have been like “send in your app and we’ll get to it when we get to it.”

…seriously? They’re toying with you because they’ve decided to release decisions at 12:17 rather than at some other arbitrary time?

I know this is an important time. But a little bit of perspective would be useful.

Look, I appreciate everything you guys do for us. I get that 12:17 is just as arbitrary as any other time they could have picked. And I get that there’s nothing I can do about it besides wait as patiently as possible. It’s the obvious Random Hall bias that, quite frankly, ****es me off.

My apologies if I’ve offended anyone. Just speaking my mind.

So you won’t let MIT express their pride in the different personalities at there school? So I’m guessing that you are also mad at Pi Day, because it shows a bias towards people who like the number Pi?
Seriously, be thankful. Admissions has worked hard, and for you to turn around and mock them is really unnecessary.

The thing is, it doesn’t. The Pi Day thing, to me at least, says “We’re proud of our nerdiness as a community.” The Random Hall thing, to me, says “Let’s reference an in-joke shared by a fraction of the MIT community; everyone else, tough luck.”

So they chose 12:17 because it’s happening on 12/17, and 17 happens to be Random’s favorite number. Suddenly this is a tragic bias and you’re angry? O.o It sounds like you’re just scrapping for another reason to be upset after people shot down your first one.

But no worries about offending - I think most people find it hard to be offended by asinine comments, anyway :)

There must be something you can do to occupy yourself for 17 minutes - I mean, seriously. Just wait patiently, you’re in the same boat as the rest of us.

Actually I would have preferred Friday night at 9PM, or if that’s not possible Saturday night at 9PM. That way I could sleep on it before having to tell anyone.

you’re mom’s asinine!!!11oneone

Am I doing it right? ;)

Um, I don’t think you are

I know that word, I just don’t get it in that sentence. (Really, english isn’t my thing. Is there something I’m missing?)

17 is my lucky number and I just realized that oh my, this could be a good omen. But I won’t get my hopes up because last time I was expecting to be aided by an omen (I was taking the ACT in room 36 of my high school), I knew I was destined to get that 36 and I fell one question short. So I’m kind of mad at myself for noticing this whole 17 thing now…if I get rejected, I might have to find a new lucky number…

How did the landlord know two angles were living together?

They had to cosine the lease.

I’ve always found it rather odd honestly that everything is always scheduled for t_min % 5 == 0 (often more specifically % 15, but I digress). Somehow we’re conditioned as a culture to love round(ish) numbers (they’re easier to understand and manipulate maybe?)

I like the 12:17 thing. It’s a break from the norm. But then again I have classes which start at such arbitrary times as 9:23 or 12:49, so maybe it already is the norm to me.

(Feel free to ignore my ramblings. I’m too [tired/anxious about decisions/excited] to make much sense, I’m sure)

12:17 on 12/17? Well that’s cute.
A question, though: is the server expected to crash, or is it actually possible that we might actually get results at that time? I know someone mentioned upgrades being made, but I was curious.

my school has this weird policy that counselors won’t send transcripts and recs to my RD schools until they know my EA decision. Thank god this year our school’s winter break is a week later than usual, so I actually have time to tell my counselor the results next week. If our winter break starts next week like it always had before, I’d be screwed for my RD apps because our counselor specifically made an announcement that they won’t do anything college-related over break and then all of my transcripts/recs/SSRs will be late.

so far everyone who applied early to colleges from our school has been rejected.
just crossing my fingers and hoping i can break that trend.

this week is gonna be a LONNNG week. sighhhh

In my experience (being on CC every time results have been released online, both RD and EA), the server has never crashed at decision time. The decisions site is hosted on mit.edu, not on mitadmissions.org.
