EA Decision Thread - Class of 2018

Deferred
ACT: 32 (36 on Math)
GPA: 3.4
EC: Softball, Crew (captain), Calculus tutor, tour guide, 2 part time jobs, intern in biomedical research lab, choral group, Field hockey

I am a girl which should have helped my chances but I think that I was deferred for two reason. One I was very sick in October causing me to be hospitalized for almost a month. Because I missed so much school I had to drop 2 of my 3 APs this year, so I ended up dropping AP physics and AP bio. My grades were also not up to my usual standard. I had a C is AP Calc BC due to missing so much material. Secondly, I applied flex path which in hindsight may not have been the best option considering my ACTs were not well. Oh well, we’ll see come April.

Accepted!!! Chemical engineering
GPA: 3.78/4 unweighted, 4.53/5 weighted (class rank 15 of 426)
SAT: 1740 (reading 490, math 690, writing 560)
SAT subjects: chem 620, math 1 750, math 2 760
ACT: 27
Really awesome letters of recommendation
Lots of AP classes in my schedule, this year AP Physics, AP Chem, AP Calc, AP English
Tons of extra curriculars

Accepted. (International)
Sat 1980 (reading680 math650 writing650)
SATII chemistry 800 math1 660
4A’s and 1 B is AS levels (bio, chem, maths, English and physics)
3A*'s and an A predicted for my A levels.
Had a Relatively long list of ECs. Good recommendations.
Didn’t do an interview.

I indicated Biochemistry to be my intended major. But now I’m turning more towards chemical engineering. I’m wondering if they let us switch majors? (Isn’t it that you actually choose major in second year?) -but if they don’t that’s ok. Still like Biochem enough not to be too bothered.

Congratulations to all who have been accepted!

Nasim - there is no problem with switching majors. My daughter is a sophomore at WPI and although she hasn’t changed majors, she has several friends who have switched - some more than once.

My son also accepted.
SAT 1590 / 2360
ACT 35
GPA UW 3.98 W 5.02
Rank 2 of 350
Several APs, college math beyond calc BC, good ECs, good recs, etc.

Now anxiously awaiting merit awards!

Deferred ):

Did anyone here do a flex path, and if so what was it like? Also does WPI not reject EA but instead defer?

Accepted Mechanical Engineering

ACT 35
SAT II Math L2 800
GPA 3.5
Rank top 10%
AP Calculus AB 5, AP Physics C Mechanics 5, AP English Language 4

Did anyone get accepted with “normal” stats? my S2: 3.6 GPA, but less than 1900 on SAT’s. Tons of EC’s and Frontiers. We applied EAII and this is his first choice…

He had one C as a Senior in AB Calc, but just switched to Reg. Calc. and he’s now getting an A. I think first quarter transcripts were already sent in.

Wonder if he can get in as it seems everyone else’s stats are much higher?

chocchipcookie, how did he do in precalc? If the transcript went in with the C in calc AB, it might be worth it for him (or his guidance counselor) to email his admissions counselor with the information that he switched to regular calc and now has an A. How did he do on the math section of the SAT? WPI seems to care very much about math. I think he has a decent chance, depending on how that SAT breaks down. Good luck!

chocchipcookie: I think the vast majority of the posters on CC are those with “abnormal” stats and that should always be taken into consideration. In the month or so I’ve been a regular reader, my perception is that the high achievers are a disproportionate population here as it’s hard to find a “B” (3.0 UW) or lower student but maybe I’m wrong or it’s just the schools I’ve been looking at (though not Ivy’s mind you). But I digress…my S was accepted EA I to WPI last week. He does attend a rigorous well thought of prep school where he maintained an 88.5 average through junior year (no weighting factor of consequence utilized at this school). He took 6 honors courses (all math and science) + 1 AP through junior year and has 3 AP’s including Calc AB and Physics this year (which he did get 90+ in both first quarter…thankfully). His ACT comp was a 28 (with a 32 in math). Modest EC’s except interesting and relevant on campus experience last summer pertaining to his intended major. Showed extensive interest (and I believe this was key) in WPI which along with math scores as the above poster indicated was I think very important. I’d be reasonably optimistic if his grades otherwise are generally good with no glaring missteps, but I’d also take her advise as I think it is sound + the contact will show added interest.

^^Thanks to both of you for your support. His Math SAT was higher than the other two, but not by much. He was consistent in all three SAT areas, with Math coming in only 10 or 20 points higher. All over 600, if that matters. Kinda low?

He has demonstrated HUGE interest. First in the Frontiers program and then he arranged with admissions staff to sit in on some classes and to go and sit for lunch with a present student. He also sent in a cover letter with his complete EC’s, since the common app didn’t have room for everything and again stated how WPI was his first choice. Many of his EC’s are techy related.

Pre-Calc final year grade as a Junior was a B-. (Honors) Not great…
He took Honors Math and Sceince throughout. Now as a senior with Reg. Calc, AP Physics C and AP computer Science.

Thanks for the advice. I will see what we can do to notify admin. rep of switch and better grade now. He did meet with a WPI rep that came to his school and I actually spoke to her on the phone a few days earlier to ask what would happen if he switches from AP to Reg. Calc. and she said that kids come in with either just Pre-Calc. or Reg. Calc. or AP Calc. So he should be okay?? Not sure. Our guidance counselor did us a disservice by encouraging EAII instead of what we had planned with EAI. Now we’re sorry we didn’t apply and get our answer sooner, since the first quarter report card is what was sent in.

According to the College Board’s college search site, WPI’s middle 50% for SAT Math is 640-720, so it sounds like your DS is near the bottom of that range. Which is obviously not where you ideally want to be, but not necessarily a show stopper. I hope his ECs and demonstrated interest will be enough to fill the gap for him.

WPI requires pre-calc, but not calc, for admissions, so your son has “enough” math, it’s just going to be a question of whether they think his math aptitude is going to be sufficient for him to handle the workload.

If your son feels that his grades and test scores are not a true reflection of his capabilities, WPI allows students to submit additional materials that better show his strengths (via their “flex path” option).

Good luck!

accepted BME
sat 1910
gpa 3.79/4.29

Has anyone gotten a letter yet? I am in California so it may take a while to get here but I thought that it would have arrived today. Also, Congratulations to everyone else who is accepted!!!

Snail mail has not arrived yet in Vermont.

Thanks Mathmomvt! I was getting worried…

WPI published their EA decisions “early” online, but they were promised for the 20th, so my guess is they weren’t mailed until then (Friday) at the earliest.

S received his snail notification on Friday. We live in Jersey.

Snail mail letter received on Friday in NH as well.

No snail on the west coast. Did it contain anything not in the portal post? Merit? Thanks!

@eyemgh: I don’t have the letter in front of me, but I am 99% sure it didn’t include anything the portal didn’t. It definitely didn’t include any merit info. Cheers!
