EA Decisions - Class of 2014

My S received the big envelope today from USD. It was his second acceptance - he was accepted at Indiana-Bloomington a few weeks ago. He still has 7 more schools to hear from - he is totally undecided as to major (pre-law, pre-med or pre-business) as well as location (east coast, west coast or midwest). But with the arrival of winter weather - USD is sounding good!

Congrats!

I recieved my admission packet just last week, which was graet for me because I’ve been wanting to go to USD since the 5th grade :p

Now, it’s all about getting the money together. Easier said than done, certainly. :p

Daughter received her accectance packet from USD on Monday! Yeh! LOVE Early Action!

When will USD notify you about any merit awards?

not sure when we hear about merit aid. I think I saw something on the MySanDiego portal about merit awards, but can’t remember what it said. Do think I remember that it said the top 30% of applicants accepted will be awarded some type of merit aid. It will be interesting.

here is what it says on the portal:

Tuition at the University of San Diego is $35,870 for one year. In addition, room and board costs average $11,000. We offer Merit Scholarships to the top 35% of our freshmen applicant pool. These four-year renewable scholarships range from $5,000 to $20,000 and are automatically awarded to students who qualify. We also offer need-based financial aid. Please see the links below for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as additional information regarding financing your USD education.

note - tuition above is for 15 credits, or 5 classes at 3 credits each. If you take a lighter or heavier load, tuition goes down or up as it is a $ amt per unit for tuition. (Older daughter is currently attending USD)

and found this on the USD website - looks like we have to wait awhile to hear:

FINANCIAL AID AWARD NOTIFICATIONS
• USD normally begins sending e-mail notifications to freshmen and undergraduate transfer students detailing how to view their Financial Aid Award on the MySanDiego Portal around the first week of March of each year. All priority freshmen applicants will be awarded by May 1, 2010. See portal information starting on page 15.
• USD does not prepare awards for students who have not been admitted.

BayAreaCAMom - Thanks for the information. I hope my S gets some sort of merit award - there is definitely a “west coast” premium at USD versus comparable schools here in the Midwest.

ChicagoBear - yes, there is definately a premium. all the schools out here (private ones) in California are very expensive. I have found that private schools in Oregon, Washington and Arizona are much cheaper. And, since they have to attract students to those rainy states, they often give a lot of merit money. My daughter got a very generous scholarship to University of Portland, and it is a great school. So, yes, we pay for everyone else’s lousy weather here in California!

and the weather in San Diego is almost the best of all of California. beautiful school and wonderful city.

(and I am from Chicago, but got soft 10 minutes after moving out here years ago!! 50 degrees out and I think it is cold!)

I got my acceptance today! I’m so excited!!!

yayy accepted!! can’t wait to decide!

im also accepted! woopee, so was my best friend! she’s seriously considering it, but im still waiting to hear back from others! when i called to ask about merit aid, the admissions office said they would notify us in march however when i told her my stats (3.9 gpa, 32 act) she said i would definitely qualify for some aid… from what I hear, a lot of people get merit aid!

girlfromSF - Thanks for posting the timeline for when we can expect merit decisions!
