Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[ul]

Subjective:

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano for 13 years, President of a few political clubs, historical fiction writing, water polo JV team captain and goalie, Leadership Academic Commissioner
[] Job/Work Experience: Research at Children’s Hospital in sickle cell disease
[] Volunteer/Community service: 450+ hours in NICU at county hospital, a lot with my church
[] Summer Activities: traveling with family (cross-country road trip), chamber music camp
[] Essays: Common App essay about my passion for medicine, showed a lot of my personality (8.5/10). UChicago essay about history, very straightforward but included my quirky love of history (7/10). Why UChicago really showed how much I love the school (9/10).
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read them but both really like me and they know my work ethic, thought process. Not close relationships but they know me as a student.
[] Counselor Rec: Our counselors are SO overworked but I think she likes me.
[] Additional Rec: None submitted
[li] Interview: Went fine. She actually was a doctor at the hospital I used to work at. We shared an interest in biographies, but it wasn’t phenomenal or anything. [/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Mid-sized Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: Too much for any FA (woot)
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I think my research probably helped.[/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Research and extracurriculars focused on my passion for medicine. Overall, I’m the kind of quirky/interested in everything kind of person that loves UChicago. When I visited and started talking about my Elizabethan-era sleepaway camp the other students were just like, “Ok, come here already.” Also my GPA and ACT couldn’t have hurt.
[] Weaknesses: My UChicago essay wasn’t wacky or phenomenal like some of the ones I’ve read. I don’t have any “hooks” in the traditional sense.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I can’t imagine a school that’s a better fit for me than UChicago. I really hope I’m able to go!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UAlabama, Fordham, and Tulane with big scholarships. [/ul]
General Comments: I visited and loved it, and I’m beyond excited about the acceptance. I don’t know if I’ll be able to attend (I got absolutely no financial aid), but a girl can dream, right?

Whoops–there’s already a thread for that. Try here instead:

Decision: Rejected

Actually, this is my decision:

That means rejected, right?

Objective:
[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (790 CR, 750 M, 800 W, 10 essay)
[] ACT: 35
[] SAT II: Chemistry (740), Literature (780), Math II (800)

[] Senior Year Course Load: Spanish III, Creative Writing, Non-Western Philosophy, Intro to Ethics, Multivariable Calculus, Intro to Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Intro to Number Theory, Numerical Analysis, Abstract Algebra. All of these are at a local university except for Spanish III.

[] Essays: 7/10. Apples and oranges.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 8/10
[] Counselor Rec: 6.5/10
[] Interview: My alumni interview was unspeakably awful. I’d rank it out of ten, but it would be a negative transcendental imaginary number.
[/ul]Other
[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] School Type: Rural public
[] Race: White
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: ~$50,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-generation
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, SAT/ACT test scores, course rigor, teacher recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: Interview, extracurriculars, awards, essays, lack of foreign language, AP test scores, didn’t demonstrate interest because I don’t do unrequited love.
[] Why you think you were rejected: The other applicants were better.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Minnesota, UIUC, Northeastern Honors, Ohio State, Case Western. Probably going to Case.
[/ul]

@halcy --That does not mean you were rejected, it means you were deferred. They are going to review your application again in the spring…

Decision: Accepted
Objective:

[] Job/Work Experience: Worked in my school’s computer lab and tech department over summers (paid position)
[] Volunteer/Community service: About 90 hours
[] Summer Activities: Work
[] Essays: Common App essay was about the spot I go to with my telescope (6 or 7/10). I chose “You are you and your…” and wrote about my bookshelf for the extended essay. In my opinion, it is some of the best writing I’ve done, 10/10. Other two essays were short and I touched on a lot of topics.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both my teacher recs were FANTASTIC, these surely helped a lot.
[] Counselor Rec: Did not read
[] Additional Rec: My boss wrote one, but I did not read it.

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: My recommendations and essays are what put me over the edge to acceptance I think. Both of them highlighted the kind of learning environment I am looking for. My grades and test scores certainly helped as well.
[] Weaknesses: Extra curriculars are a little lacking. I don’t do much to really show my interest in my intended major. I could have done more volunteering as well.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Recs and Essays
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This is the first result I’ve gotten[/ul][/li]General Comments: Very happy right now

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”

Okay seriously internationals, please write if you applied for financial aid or not. That is very pertinent information.

You know what? I hate to be all “conspiracy” but yes, I did not apply for financial aid. Don’t quote me, but deep in my heart I did not dare to jeopardize my chances in applying for financial aids. I would rather roll in some debt for a few years. Plus my family is going to support my college funds based on my GPA (if I get 4.0, I get 80% support)…

Understand that this does not apply to everyone. If your family cannot easily support your college funds, please do not think that rolling in debt of 250k or something is going to be easy…

Lol it’s not a conspiracy theory or anything. It’s a fact. If you apply for aid, your chances plummet. That said, U of C is not easy to get into, and clearly your acceptance indicates that you were very qualified and would possibly have been accepted with aid as well. Congratulations!

@International95

Well, thanks, and also I feel quite bad that choosing financial aid or not affected my chances. Well, this is life…

I did not apply for aid.

@stanfordmania

People like you make me wonder how I got in.

Like, WOW. Just look at your ECs. So amazing.
