EA/ED advantage

I have heard two varying opinion on the beneficiality of applying either EA or ED. On one hand people have said that it helps if you are definitely qualified to get into a school but want to reassure them you are interested but should only be done if you have stats that are at least on par for a college. On the other hand, some people say if you are underqualified it helps to show a great amount of interest and what not. Which do you think is true?

I don't think there's much of an advantage to applying EA as far as your chances go (SCEA not included). ED can definitely improve your chances, though. Colleges claim the much higher ED acceptance rates are a result of a more competitive applicant pool, but I'm not so sure- colleges like to have high yields.
