EA/ED Decision for my daughter

“Most schools say that legacy is undergrad only, and applies to parents.”

It doesn’t matter what most schools do. Only matters what these exact schools say. Legacy definitions and practices vary by school.

Penn has a broader definition of legacy than others. Grandfather’s med school degree makes this kid a legacy at Penn:

“At Penn, legacy is defined as having a parent or grandparent graduate from any of Penn’s undergraduate or graduate schools.”

To get the legacy bump, Penn says you have to apply ED.

NW counts grandparents too I believe. Also likes to see legacies apply ED.

Sounds like the decision has been made but if Northwestern is still in the running, there is a significant boost for applying ED.

Should Wash U not work out, I agree with @bopper, take a look at Case Western.

My daughter visited both Case and Wash U, applied to both, and would have been happy at either, although she ended up choosing an LAC.

You don’t need to have a clear #1 to go ED.

You just need to be 100% aok with going to that school if you get in. Good fit is all you need.

Tons of kids don’t have a clear #1. Tons of kids don’t get to go to their clear #1 for numerous reasons (don’t get in; can’t pay for it, etc.). Most of them end up loving the place that loves them and where they enroll even if it was #2 or #3.

just as a another thought. I think Tulane is still rolling EA admissions. If it is, and is a serious option, it might be good to apply there as well. It was a match/safety for my DDs. They both applied early and were accepted by Thanksgiving. It did not prevent ED admissions anywhere else, and took tremendous pressure off the process since they were into a school they would be happy to go to.

Agree on applying to Tulane EA as a back up. My kids got accepted there very fast/early with scholarships. Definitely helps the process.

Just need to check to make sure applying EA Tulane and ED somewhere else complies with the rules of both schools.

https://admission.tulane.edu/apply/instructions indicates that Tulane offers non-binding non-restricted EA as well as binding ED.

Along with what others have said, Tulane EA, Case Western Reserve EA, and the University if Pittsburgh is a great rolling admissions school. Very strong in many programs, and a student can receive their decision in as quick as 3 weeks. Does Tulane notify about admissions on a rolling basis even though they have a set due date for EA?

I agree that applying ED to WUSTL if she likes it a lot will greatly increase her chances of admission vs. applying RD. Also, I would definitely recommend visiting Penn before applying ED, even if it decreases her chances for admission. It feels much more urban than the other schools on the list. As someone said, that’s great for some, but not for many others.
