Almost everyone at my high school recieved their EA from JMU today, with an overwhelming amount of defferals from strong candidates. I'd say of the 110-2 or so people I know applied, only 3 got in. I have yet to recieve my letter, and am hoping it comes tomorrow or the next day. Was I wrong in assuming that an A-B average with a strong schedule at a competitive in-state High School and 1100-1300 SATs were a safe bet for JMU? Any of you guys got your EA letters and want to share?

i got accepted. in state - sorta competitive. didnt do essay or recs.

undecided, Do you mean that 110 or 112 students applied EA to JMU and only 3 were accepted instate? If that is the case, wow, that is a pretty poor result from your hs. Are those kids mostly in the ballpark for JMU's average stats? How many got rejected in the EA round?

articsilver, congratualations!

i find that kind of hard to believe...i am also in-state, and i know tons of people w/ much lower than the stats you described who have gotten in. in fact, i know of very few people from my high school who have been rejected.

perhaps you meant 11-12? lol :P

yay! acceptance letter today! out of state, competitive high school ,and did the essay. hoping for nursing

i got deferred..in-state with 3.6 gpa and 1290 sat from a fairly competitive high school. im quite confused to say the least, many of my friends have gotten into jmu with sub-par academic credentials. i only hope that i can get in regular decision, as jmu is my number 1 choice. anyone else here share my pain on the deferral list?

user209, Perhaps it depends upon the school you applied to at JMU.

i applied to the college of arts and letters, which i think is the most common for prospective freshmen. the letter i received said that the admissions committee would allow me to send in new information i would like to submit to my file and my guidance counselor told me that includes another letter of recommendation..but i have a question to whomever can answer it: my stepdad, who i was very close with until his passing, was the director of counseling at jmu for about 10 years during the 70's-80's. i declined to mention this in my application, since he is not techincally a part of my immediate family, but i now realize i may have been able to explain how he was a big part of my life. if i get in touch with a family friend who recently left his position at jmu and was well-acquainted with my stepdad, do you think a letter of recommendation from him would possibly heighten my chances of acceptance? thanks for any helpful responses

UNDECIDED-wow thats a lot of people 110? only 3 were accepted? how did you know so many people that applied. what were some of the stats of the people that got rejected?

user209-i feel your pain! i was defered too, it totally blows

ureneth-what were some of the stats of people you know who did get in?

I just got my deferral letter today - Class president 3 years in a row, started 3 clubs, president of 2 clubs, 5 AP classes, tons of extracurriculars, blah blah, 3.91 GPA, ...but.. 1180 SAT (which is probably the reason I was deferred.) I did the essay on the app. I also stated my major, which may or may not have played a role in the decision.

but still, to be deferred from my number 1 choice didnt exactly make my day :(

many of the people who got in at my school had high class rank/SAT scores and were semi-involved with sports, SGA, and whatnot

And now we wait until April 1st...

and I am definitely retaking my SATs... despite the fact that they are well in JMU's acceptance range... hmmph

go dukes?

yeah sorry about the typo, i did mean 11-12 students, not 110-112 haha. Liz thats ridiculous that you didn't get in. JMU seems to be very hit or miss this year, not much consistency in the admissions. I still haven't recieved my letter, and it better come today! I'll let you guys know about me but I have a 3.6 GPA at a tough high school, officer in 3 clubs, great essay (had 3 AP teachers read it) good reccomendations, and (my strongest point) a 1350 SAT (2080 with writing). My GPA isn't that great but I'm still hopeful.

articsilver-congratulations, what were your GPA and SAT scores?

I just got my letter about an hour ago and I got in! Not my first choice school, but I would still be ridiculously happy at this school and I've heard great things about it and had a great time on my visits. Congratulations to all the acceptances and to everyone who got deferred, don't get down, just keep working hard.

Well congrats to all that got in! Did the acceptances come in "fat envelope" and deferrals come in "thin". Can't stand the suspense but it seems that my stats match those of you who were deferred. :(

Hawk...forgot to ask...what was the breakdown of your SAT's?

Wow, reading your posts, the decisions do seem very weird. To those of you who were deferred with great scores (SAT and GPA) maybe it was the curriculum ( like no AP, IB courses)..

At our school, I'm not really sure, but of my 3 friends who applied, all three got in.

I did as well. :)

Good luck to everyone though!
