i was thinking about applying to MIT early action and i know the competition is very very tough then so i was wondering if MIT usually defers people they don't accept to the regular round rather than outright rejecting them.. anyone know the stats on this?

MIT only rejects people in the early round whom they are sure would not be competitive candidates in the regular round.

Last year, about 11% of applicants were accepted EA, about 13% were rejected EA, and the rest were deferred to RD. At the end of the RD round, 19% of EA applicants had been admitted, 13% had been rejected early, and 67% had been rejected or waitlisted during regular decision. (Numbers here.)
