My theory as to why they would email only deferred students is that BC is experimenting with using email notifications in the future and they started with the deferred students first this year. Perhaps they feel it is tacky to reject students by email and prefer to let them know by regular mail. They are notifying the accepted students the traditional way since they send them the enrollment forms with the acceptance letter. Just a theory, lol!!

Honestly surprised that you were deferred

Hey @askboston you applied here too?! We must be interested in the same type of schools haha I didnt hear anything so hopefully thats a good sign!

I think they proabably sent the deferred kids emails to save money. Think about it this way: of you’re deferred, that means that they definitely have to send you a letter during the RD round (telling you if you were accepted or denied), why would they spend the money to send TWO letters to an applicant they might not even accept? That being said, I wish all of you deferred applicants good luck in the RD round, and all of my fellow still-waiting-EA applicants good luck as well!

I really am feeling so worried and shaken up about this.

Would I be rejected with a 2130 SAT, 3.93 UW, 4.45 W, and 05/398 Class rank + a decent amount of EC’s including leadership positions, as well as volunteer service? I am first generation and I am not applying for financial aid.

I don’t want to get my hopes up but the next… I guess I’d say about a week before we get letters, is going to be excruciating. BC is my top choice.

So BC asked for my mid-semester grades and they were pretty strong considering they were all APs and I only had one B. I didn’t get deferred. Would it be bad for me to be really optimistic right now?

There is a previous poster who said she called the Admissions Office and was told that all EA applicants who were deferred were notified by email today. However, deferral letters will still be sent out on December 14th along with acceptance and rejection letters. It is all pretty stressful, but we will all know by next week.

Chingoo, when did they ask for your grades? I’m also awaiting a response but I never got that

Does anyone know what the percentages are for EA admission at Boston College (% accepted EA, % deferred EA, % rejected EA)? I didn’t get a deferral email so I’m wondering how many EA applicants they reject. I’d assume they defer more people than they reject but I’m not sure…

Everyone, they probably emailed the deferred students to notify them of their decision so that they would have sufficient time to edit and redo their apps for the regular decision! Don’t read into it too much, you have another chance! :)

Dear jlucey539 : The numbers for EA admission drift each and every year, however, the rough numbers for your reference are as follows in the EA round : 30% admissions offers, 50% deferrals, and 20% rejections. The shape of the curve can change and has been in the 20%/60%/20% range in other years.

If you are deferred, approximately 20% of deferrals gain admission in the regular decision round. This represents approximately 10%-12% of the total EA round applications. In other words, a deferral in the EA round is a signal that the applicant should seriously begin to consider other options while diligently completing the regular decision applications at other institutions.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: The Boston College office of admissions apologized early today/last night for accidentally sending out deferral emails yesterday. They’re saying that they were testing out a new system and they didn’t mean to send those notifications. Although they didn’t mean to send them out, they are all correct and anyone who got a deferral has been deferred, but there are more EA deferrals to come.

More deferrals?? Ughhhhhhhhhh

This is making less and less sense. 2 previous posters were told contradictory things by the admissions office this week and now this “new development”? Can I ask jlucey539 how you got this news? Thanks~

I agree. This makes no sense. Where is this announcement? Will they be sending more deferral emails or will they be mailed?

more deferrals :(???

I’m pretty sure all deferrals were emailed. I don’t think it just sent “a certain amount”. Also I expect what the BC office really meant was that there is indeed deferrals to come in the mail. I truly don’t think that just “half” deferrals were sent out… That’d be really messed up IMO.

I am inclined to agree with you Damond3. Let’s hope we are right!

I think we should trust those that called the Office of Admissions and were told that all people who were deferred received emails. I am sure that if there was some mistake, BC would notify all of us about what was going on.
